Pros
So long as you pay attention to what's going on around you, it's okay to study on the job. You might be able to get in at least a couple of hours of reading between customers. If you take a night shift, you'll get even more time than that. It's a really easy job, so long as you make sure the customers are aware of the rates BEFORE they enter the garage. Many of your coworkers will be interesting people from different countries; if you take the time to get to know them, you'll hear all sorts of interesting stories.
Cons
Attendants don't get a great deal of respect from the public; there is a social stigma against parking attendants. No opportunity for advancement unless you become a supervisor, but supervisors are worked to the bone. Being promoted from attendant to supervisor just isn't worth the trouble. If your relief calls in sick on a weekend shift, you might have a to train a brand new employee how to operate your booth over the course of an hour (and that employee may have a tenuous grasp of English.) Every lot has different keys on the register, so that you have to learn the register for each lot.
Advice to Senior Management
Cross-train attendants between lots. Have each attendant work at least two different facilities so that there is less need to train on the fly and the pool of relief for each lot is doubled.
Pros
President and Vice President were pretty easy to work with, and they are very easygoing about taking time off when needed. Compensation and benefits were very fair. And micromanagement was not an issue. Was always treated with respect.
Cons
Training was virtually nill and direct supervisor was ill-equipped for training and lacked patience. The atmosphere is very "cliquey" and unwelcoming. I don't know how long you have to work there to make friends, but it most of the employees are quite uninterested in "newbies."
Advice to Senior Management
No quarrels with the President or Vice President. My direct supervisor, however, is not well suited for management. Her interpersonal skills are very poor, and she has no business being in charge of employees. It took me 6 months to realize it wasn't me, just her personality!
Pros
Spending time outside.
Spending time waiting/chilling.
During the summer, the tips are better.
Cons
If you work at the Nines, expect to run a lot.
Tips are shiit.
They don't really give a shiit about the employees.
Advice to Senior Management
Since you chose a further away parking lot for the Nines, we now have to run harder, and since more valets now need to be staffed, we make less tips ($1-3/hr). This means we now have to work more for less. You should compensate by increasing our wages, which can come from the money you saved switching lots. But you won't because you don't give a shiit about your valets.
Pros
can make quick money, you get what you give to the job, they have many location so there is sure to be some place near you
Cons
the best money is made when you wish you were out with friends, there is no room for advancement at all.
Advice to Senior Management
you need to have more trust in you employees and treat them with respect. the company turnover is high for a reason.. not the employees, its the employer
