I worked at dELiA*s part-time for more than a year

    Pros

It was my first job so I learned a great deal.

    Cons

poor management, low pay, low hours even for well performing sales associates, lots of favoritism even if undeserved, a few people working under the counter. By the time you buy the clothes that you have to wear for work (and you have to update frequently) there is not much left of your paycheck even with the discount. Lots of on-call shifts that they never actually need you for even if most of your shifts are on-call shifts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

treat your sales associates better and practice better judgment with managers.

I worked at dELiA*s full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The small setting allowed me to establish relationships with different departments and learn the business well. The office culture is very laid back and fun given the brand.

    Cons

The company values and career advancement were not particularly pleasing. Given the size of the company one would think its easy to grow but you get pigeoned into the same role without opportunity to advance.

I have been working at dELiA*s part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

It's a great work environment, it can at times seem more like a family than a staff. Fun, upbeat atmosphere. The skills you will learn will be ones you carry through every career from then-on.

    Cons

Pay is terrible. Initially, hours will be less than adequate, but over time you will get more. Management can get inconsistent.

    Pros

Learned a lot. Potential to grow early on.

    Cons

High turnover in upper management. Initiative overload.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come up with training programs/selling strategies and test before pushing them out to stores. Too many times a great idea would come out. Then in 3 months that would be squished by another idea. Many of which did not overlap. No one knew what to go by.

    I have been working at dELiA*s part-time

    Pros

You meet nice people, get good discounts (40% not sale items) - they occasionally have "Because we love associates" deals which give you even better offers, and can learn the basics to a retail job.

    Cons

Company really pushes for sales and numbers even though they say its all about the "connection". You don't really get a reward or compensation for having high SPH (sales per hour) when they say there is. Not really any break time.

I have been working at dELiA*s part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Acquire priceless experience and skills in the sales industry. For some, the discount is a plus. Once in the management position, the job is fairly easy going.

    Cons

High turnover rate starting with the fashion reps and ending with the regional management. Very demanding for the pay you get, especially as a sales rep. Too much politics for a small store.

Former Employee - Assistant Store Manager in Columbus, OH

I worked at dELiA*s full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I gained a lot of experience and responsibility of every aspect of the day to day supervision of running a successful store, including sales, staff, stock and resources management. I enjoyed working with the young fashion reps, for most of them, it was there first job. I had a blast training them and teaching them new sales techniques.

    Cons

This company is all about Favoritism. The upper management would dole out the benefits based on who they like, rather than who is doing the best job for the company. It was very frustrating to work for a company that allows favoritism to flourish. As an employee, I worked extremely hard for this company. Although, I felt as if my concerns were ignored, they did not care about me as a person and I became more and more dissatisfied with my job. Poor upper management is also a culprit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Favoritism hurts morale, diminishes performance and productivity, and leads to lower retention rates, as employees whose good work goes unrecognized decide to move on to better opportunities.
