Good for (those who are from) Cincinnati

Senior Analyst (Former Employee)

I worked at dunnhumby full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI worked here for 3 years in an analytical role in the Cincinnati office.

- great work/life balance (rarely work 50+ hours a week; client side works <= 40 hours)
- great name in CPG & retail sectors (for exit opportunities)
- good learning & growth opportunities for an entry-level employee
- some smart people
- their approach to customer-centric retail is a good business model

Cons- their analytical capabilities are simplistic; as an analyst, don't expect to learn much about statistics or big data (even though they claim to have expertise in it)
- a small portion of the projects are exploratory and interesting, whereas the majority are monotonous and turn-key analyses. I've experienced both types of projects; however, many analysts are stuck in boring roles
- the politics at this company are a joke; employees from Cincinnati are highly favored (hence all the 5 star ratings you see on here with little explanation)
- your manager essentially dictates your career and ability to succeed
- not a meritocracy (at all)
- a number sub-par employees who are promoted despite their lack of ability
- leadership is focused on the client-side of the business; therefore there are fewer growth opportunities for employees on the analyst side
- hardly any diversity (in terms of education, business experience, social/demographic background, et cetera)
- very reluctant to evolve their preexisting business practices, which has allowed competitors to surpass them

Advice to Senior Management- expand your recruiting search; bring in talented people and give them opportunities to change the business
- put more emphasis on expanding analytical competency
- drive innovation based on business logic and clients' needs, not employee preference
- weed out mediocre employees; reward the good ones
- don't just talk the talk; walk the walk

Can be great, depending...

Director (Current Employee)
Cincinnati, OH

I have been working at dunnhumby full-time for less than a year

ProsA lot of talented, enthusiastic people - in certain areas
Excellent vacation benefit
Good pay
Bonus and 401K match are good
A lot of "community" feeling

ConsVery youth and energy focused, can be hard to "swim" there if you're not an energetic extrovert
Everything, and I mean everything is a committee effort.
Often more importance placed on image, politics, and perception than actually getting things done.
Very "wild west", process-wise. They manage to work hard enough to make up for it much of the time, but it's not a sustainable model.
Health benefits are geared toward young people with no health issues. Can be expensive otherwise.
Management style - and employee experience - can vary widely depending on what part of the business you're in.
Being good at what you do is not sufficient for success there. You must also be able to negotiate the social and political maze.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe realistic and critical about whom you're hiring, and whether they will fit in, culturally.
Walk the walk of committing to quality.
Don't rely on energy and enthusiasm to keep things rolling.

Classless and unprofessional.

Client Director (Former Employee)

I worked at dunnhumby full-time for more than a year

ProsOverpaid for what you're hired to do.

ConsThis place is like a dysfunctional family that refuses to air their dirty laundry. The focus is on making the outside think this is a "great place to work" when in reality few employees are truly happy. Horrible stories of disgusting things happening in the office parking lots and the culture fuels gossip and unprofessional behaviour. Tacky, trashy, and classless are the best words to describe this place. Don't be fooled- they have a great PR strategy but cannot live up to the hype. The arrogance is overwhelming and the philosophy is that if you're not an employee, it's because "you're not smart enough to work here". Ridiculous.

Valuable Work, Wonderful Company

Analyst (Current Employee)
Cincinnati, OH

I have been working at dunnhumby as an intern for less than a year

ProsThe company's policy of work hard, play hard makes for a great working environment where the projects are real and relevant but are balanced with programs for personal and community well-being. Everywhere you look at dunhumby, there is a valuable learning opportunity, and everyone is approachable and ready to share.

ConsIf there was any con, it would be that the internship is such a short amount of time. The interns miss the opportunity of learning deeply about the company and having proper training before being submerged into projects.

Best place I've worked, but a landslide

Associate Director (Current Employee)
Cincinnati, OH

I have been working at dunnhumby full-time for more than 5 years

ProsChallenging
Fast Paced
Building customer loyalty
Working with BIG BIG data
Cream of the crop co-workers
You can make your own opportunities
5+ weeks of vacation
Flexible working schedule
Management cares about the people
Huge involvement in the community
They allow you time to work on innovative ideas
Huge push for work-life balance (most areas of the company)

ConsThere is a bit of "It's who you know" to get ahead here, promotion/recognition process needs some work
Despite evidence to the contrary, management, at times, sets unrealistic expectations or overlooks quality for cheaper costs
We don't challenge our clients to keep the customer first as often as we used to
The push for globalization contradicts our message of market relevancy
