    Military, home and telepresence robots

Principal Mechanical Engineer (Current Employee) Bedford, MA

ProsMilitary robots: you get to save lives!
Home robots: a chance to work on cool stuff and see the fruit of your labors on store shelves around the world.
Telepresence: contribute to an emerging paradigm.

ConsLong hours, frequent Asia travel if working on Home robots. (Then again, some like that.)
Recent federal budget cuts have taken their toll on the military side.

Advice to Senior ManagementBring back idea bakeoffs.

    Great place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCool environment, people were great. Working everyday with Robots was the coolest experience, plus there is so much to learn from the people there

ConsInstability, as the company grew at a fast pace, and when the economy slowed, layoffs were inevitable.

    Mostly good, some discontent

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Bedford, MA

ProsFlex time is available and they start you out with three weeks vacation. The health benefits are standard with employee contribution. Given the necessary tools to accomplish the job. The people are very nice.

ConsThere seems to be a general discontent of the management by a lot of the people. There is a feeling of an unstable work environment due the a regular dose of layoffs and firings. Can be a loud work environment with robots running around.

Advice to Senior ManagementBroaden the product category to include more than vacuums and military robots

    Good, fun place to work

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Bedford, MA

ProsLots of Interesting work, lots of robots running around, diverse problems to work on, ranging from embedded code and drivers to applications. The research group gets into some very interesting projects.. Fun company culture, and good work life balance. They genuinely care about the employees.

ConsG&I division depends on government funding, which can sometimes be slow or problematic.

Advice to Senior ManagementDiversify to more industry products.

Still some growing pains - but overall a great place to work.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsNo micro managing, you are enabled to do your job
    Progressive and interesting product
    Lot's of great co-workers
Not a large company, but global so you get access to different ways of doing things

ConsLot's of change at executive level, so it's tough to get traction on your projects
Communication challenges up the ladder and between departments
Globalizing is a little painful, but then again it usually is!

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage employees to communicate
    Minimize the executive turnover
    Consolidate divisions

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

So much potential, it is invigorating but also frustrating when the magic isn't appreciated by C-level execs.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Bedford, MA

ProsThe business of designing robots requires broad experience, and gives employees broad experience when working here. Employees can cultivate their understanding of mechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing as applied to consumer and military robots. It is not a boring place to work.

ConsSuprisingly, there are almost never any cool robots wandering the halls.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe magic of Roomba and Packbot is partially due to the accidental nature of the success. Many of the conference rooms are named with a "failed" robot. Let's regain the enthusiasm we had and build some more failures. At worst we will get some more conference room names, and it's a great way to stumble upon next big thing. Bonus is that employees will want to get out of bed in the morning to participate.
