Immature engineering management, but finally found a sales path

I have been working at icix full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Casual environment. Pay is decent (above average, but not top-of-the-valley). Some good, smart engineers - especially some of the new blood hired in the past year. Depending on the manager, some ability to work from home. Finally (as of 2014) found a viable sales direction which seems to be working.

    Cons

Bulk of the code is ancient (.NET) with low-performing "specialists" kept around to patch it. Newer code is a mix of modern technologies, but still no focus on scalability. Top-level engineering management has no leadership skills - CTO is a CTO only because his business card says so. Terrible office location - middle of nowhere South SF. Well below Silicon Valley standards for accommodations and perks - only catered food twice per week with no restaurants within walking distance, no "special" benefits to speak of, crappy cubes, old laptops...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a new top-level engineering lead. What you've got isn't working. At all. This company could be great with 6-12 months of real engineering direction.

    Pros

    Very smart people, very motivated
Incredible market concept, Should be a huge winner
    Initial customers in F100

    Cons

Unable to stick to a strategy. Shoot, ready, aim. Lots of chaos among the executive team. Fundamentally different visions between founders, CEO, and President who was caught in the middle. CEO brought in huge, expensive enterprise sales force before demonstrating a repeatable sales process or fixing the product. Burned through a lot of cash.

I have been working at icix full-time for more than a year

    Pros

A couple cute guys, LBGT friendly, I think they COO and CTO are LBGT friendly for sure. There is reasonable tolerance of work life balance. Catered food is perk here, although we also have food trucks coming that are also good.

    Cons

Perhaps it's the musical chairs of how is working here today, but, we are losing ground and accounts with big name customers, e.g. Walmart etc. Seems like when Paul Touw came in there was this good inertia to grow and spend beyond a reasonable rate, and we've been paying for it every month from about 6 months of when he started. He also brought in this some silliness of what the business does verse reality. I think he lost the silliness battle and is on the street now as a 'consultant' to the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up with staff reductions and consider a new management team. When you fail with a wonder-boy, you might want to consider a wonder-girl next time.

    Nice people, casual atmosphere, lunch

    Cons

Apparently no vision about how this great idea could be used, rudderless

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hope its not too late, the growth planned for last year just fizzled.

I have been working at icix full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Strong ownership of each employee's domain -- the teams are still small, and every person makes a very big difference to the company's performance and culture.

Related to that, there's a fair bit of freedom to figure things out your own way.

Upper management has a very good CV and seems to be pushing things in a good direction on the business side.

Free food (most days) and snacks.

    Cons

The culture is kind of vague and has distinct "cliques", though this seems to be improving

Awkward commute (though it's better than being in the city)

Some serious lack of maturity for lots of internal things (expense reports are on paper, there's no intranet, HR is basically non-existant, etc.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some of the long-timers are so dead-set resistant to change. If they don't come around, they're only hurting morale. Lose them.

    Pros

    Business Model is very intriguing

    Cons

Weak leadership, darwinian environment, poor judgement in top loading the management team, excessive expense on analytics and SFA that don't have results. CEO is out of touch, CFO no comment, COO is full of himself, CTO is a kid, most VP's are not the brightest crayons in the box.

I have been working at icix full-time

    Pros

The Icix business model is a good one. The company has grown quite a bit the last year and it has potential to be very successful. There are a lot of good people at the company.

    Cons

Engineering senior management fragmented and the CTO seems to be out of his depth. Earlier last year engineering seemed to have promising vision for adding new technologies, but has been stagnant since management changes during the 2nd half of 2012.

Morale is low and myself and many of my colleagues feel demotivated and undervalued. This seems to stem from a lack of downward communication and a lack of direction and vision.

Engineering was asked to survey the management team several weeks back and has yet to see the results. I am beginning to wonder if the results were so poor that some of the management team are trying to bury it.

Many in engineering were surprised that the CTO didn't recognize the menu structure of our product in a recent presentation and it was talked about by many for several days afterward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Top management needs to get engineering management back on track before good but demotivated engineers feel pushed out. The company needs more seasoned leaders in the engineering department who have experience in managing growth.

    Pros

Very casual place to work. Most of the people are very bright. Very family considerate. Very impressive customer base. Great diversity.

    Cons

Company is becoming a big trash can in Engineering department. No motivation. No direction. Extreme stress. 12 years old technology without a clear roadmap.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a Team in Engineering. Do not split it into competing groups.
