Great close knit family culture; consistent exceptional performance is rewarded.

    Sales Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsThere is a definite small family feel to the culture, despite being mid-sized. Accountability across all areas of the company is increasing, which is good. This is coupled with a relentless drive for growth, also positive. Product development is customer centric, and strives to simplify the complex.

ConsFlat organizational structure can seem limiting to some. Project management processes and employee communications could be improved.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend more time with your customer facing employees to truly understand business needs.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Nice place to visit.....you won't build a career there!

    Sales Engineer (Former Employee)
    Exton, PA

ProsThe pay for sales was decent for a while when they brought in qualified, experienced sales professionals. I liked my colleagues- we could commiserate over beers together.

ConsThe last few years the best sales people have left and they replace them with younger less experienced college grads. Management and HR have little clue what motivates people and they prefer younger sales engineers that they can mold and make them believe this is how it is everywhere. Growth every year is difficult based on their commission plan. Ask them to explain IN DEPTH the "delta" commission plan before signing on- most good sales people leave after a good year because the self defeating plan makes consecutive successful years nearly impossible. This is the definition of "Old Boy Network"- if you don't want to brown nose you are best getting out.

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop some guts and explain to Germany the differences in the North American market and sales force motivation. Reward success not just those who say and do what you want. The emperor has no clothes there because they don't want to know the truth.

Great potential and brilliant CEO, but serious upper-management problems.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Malvern, PA

ProsFriendly work environment with helpful and encouraging people. Strong sense of family amongst the sales team.
    The company produces excellent products.
    Benefits are fantastic.
Fun social gatherings that really help to bring everyone together as a team.

ConsEmployees are encouraged to share their complaints and are then shunned for it when they do. Negative feedback is seen as the employee not being a "team player".
Very far behind in technology and slow to adapt to the times.
The IT department is extremely painful to deal with due to controling and manipulative management. Takes forever to get anything from them and even their staff seem disgruntled with management.
No room for advancement in most departments.

Advice to Senior ManagementSome people who have been with the company for a long time are no longer providing significant value and are in fact causing discord and an unwillingness to change. These people should be sorted out and removed. (Payroll and IT come to mind).
Stop relying on upper management for all decisions. You have a lot of bright people in the company with a lot to offer, LISTEN to them.

Generally a great place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Exton, PA

ProsReally strong family/team atmosphere. Compensation was decent, my manager was great.

ConsManagement does not deal with slackers - at. all. Instead they get rid of people they don't like and don't fire people that should have been gone long ago - who contribute nothing and even create a hostile environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep and reward dedicated, high performing employees. If an employee needs to be spoken to about their performance and/or attitude more than a couple times, it's time to go. Also, create a working-from-home policy that benefits everyone, not just favorites.

Not an organization for highly-motivated / career minded individuals...

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Exton, PA

Prosifm manufacturers some of the best sensors and controls in the industry.

The employees at ifm create a true family atmosphere.

    Continual safe growth

    High level of job security

Benefits are on par with the industry

ConsThe majority of the mid to upper management team have not worked outside of this organization, resulting in a lack of perspective when it comes to the 'reality' that employees and customers have to deal with on a day-to-day basis.

Professional development is not encouraged, in fact, professional development is discouraged in some departments.

Under performers are not encouraged to increase performance, nor are they ever removed from their positions.

Compensation is very low compared to the industry, merit increases are not common / if ever. given.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage open communication amongst employees and management.

Work hard to retain your "A" players and further their professional development.

Put plans in place to develop under performers, or remove them from the organization.

Analyze compensation plans before you lose your "A" players.

    Excellent company to work for

    Human Resources (Current Employee)
    Exton, PA

ProsPeople were great, good this, company was innovative and forward thinking. Within manufacturing, had solid methodology and SOP standards in place. Product Managers very knowledgeable. The company was open to new ideas, and treats its employees, customers, and vendors well. The interview was one of the toughest, but very thorough.Excellent benefits.

ConsOnly downside was there was limited growth for advancement in the corporate location in some departments.

Advice to Senior ManagementConinue to be great. Tap into employees skills sets as best as you can for the future.

Great place to start in technical sales, difficult to stay

    Field Sales Engineer (Current Employee)
    Philadelphia, PA

ProsGreat product, stable company, work flexibility, well respected.

ConsI left after 5+ years after watching collegues leave for other organizations and be promoted to Directors, Managers, and National Sales Mgrs within 1-3 years leaving ifm. The expectations are being at ifm for 10+years before given any real advancement to manager. It is difficult waiting for that opportunity when there are manager favorites with 5-10+ years experience ahead of you. No outside hires contribute to a groupthink mentality of people that have been with company for 20-30 years. Compensation varies greatly by manager favorites. At times, unprofessional behavior exhibited by managers.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate real career paths for mid-career employees, and promote them.

    Great company to work for!

    Field Sales Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsGreat benefits, team environment, almost like an extended family. A company that hires nice people and provides them with top-notch training. Definitely an elite salesforce within the industrial automation realm.

ConsDepending on the manager, not enough feedback given on performance. Not many other bad things to say about the company, but there are definitely favorites of management.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe U.S. market isn't the same as the German market. Find some backbone and stand up to German management from time to time like Vince McM. would do.

Make a great product and a good company to work for

    Telesales (Current Employee)

ProsThe management is very respectful and communicate information well. ifm manufactures great products which are priced to sell and provide value which is hard to beat in the sensor world.

ConsSome of the employees are complacent and don't have the motivation to excel. This creates an atmosphere that is unprofessional at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management recognizes the value of all the employees and shows it. Communication could be more open but overall the management is doing a great job.
