A very tech driven company, with many truly good people working for it.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at nTelos

ProsThe small family feel to the company is the best part about working for nTelos. There are some great people working there. It is a very tech-centric company, so it's a fantastic place to stretch your skillset if you're an IT pro, and even if you're not. You will definitely learn a lot a nTelos.

ConsSome of the management (not all) is very much like a popularity contest or a clique. There are certainly members of management who are there simply because of who they know, rather than based on merit or qualifications. That becomes amplified at such a small business, because everyone knows who these people are. Look out for those people, because they're ruthless.

Still, there are plenty of good managers there, and plenty who have earned their place in the org.

The single biggest con however, is that there isn't much room for movement in a company this size. You will encounter a glass ceiling - people in vertical positions aren't leaving and you're not getting promoted. It is the nature of the beast in this size organization, so be prepared for that if you accept a position. It may take YEARS longer than it would at a larger company to get a promotion.

Advice to Senior ManagementEven in a down economy, talented people have choices, and nTelos isn't the type of place who can compete financially with other similar organizations. Be careful not to run your talent off with witch hunts, or bizarre policy, or with those managers who are part of a clique. If you have the talented people, keep them happy.

Figure out a way to reward your talent when you can't promote them. Figure out a way to promote them when the opportunity arises.

No hope of a long career

Sales Representative (Current Employee)
Waynesboro, VA

I have been working at nTelos full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood benefits. That is all

ConsManagement, turnover, no job security, inconsistency, horrible base pay, inconsistent commission structure

I literally panic about the possibility of getting fired at least once a week. The micro management is almost too much. I look for a new job every single day. And this is after 5 years of employment

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't even know where to begin

Good Company, If You Can Handle the Bureaucracy

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Waynesboro, VA

I worked at nTelos full-time for more than 3 years

ProsReasonable pay for the area
Good opportunities for exposure to new technologies
Opportunities for advancement

ConsVery entrenched upper management, not welcome to new ideas. Lots of "good-ole-boys" golfing buddies.
Very byzantine bureaucracy to accomplish anything.
Low pay (while OK for regional standards)

Advice to Senior ManagementTry and move some of the dead wood... Just because so-and-so is y ou cousin, doesn't make them able to run a business.
