Employee FAQ's
- Why should I post a review or salary?
-
Some of you may just want to tell your story, others may be looking for a job, and still others may be completely satisfied where you are (but still curious).
For those who want to tell your story, never before have you had such an open forum for discussing what it's really like to work at your company. There are people on the outside trying to learn more about life on the inside, and we're pretty confident there are people on the inside watching too.
For those who are looking for a job or who may be just a bit curious, you should post a review or salary to see all the information shared by our community. Since we're just getting started, we have launched with a “give to get” model. Put simply, it's a form of sharing; you need to give us something (a review or salary post of your own) before you get access to all the information shared by our community.
We think it seems fair, 5-10 minutes is a pretty small price to pay for all that information (especially when most other services charge you for it). And think of it this way, it's good career karma.
- Why do I need to post a review or salary to view information?
-
Since we're just getting started, we decided to launch with a “give to get” model. Put simply, it's a form of sharing; you need to give us something (a review or salary post of your own) before you get access to all the information shared by our community. So if you post a review for your current or former employer, you'll get access to all the reviews on Glassdoor. If you post a salary, you'll get access to all the salaries.
We think it seems fair, 5-10 minutes is a pretty small price to pay for all that information (especially when some other services charge you for it). If that's not enough to convince you, you might want to check out one of our “Sneak Peak” companies to get a preview of all the information you'd be missing.
- What do you mean by “anonymous”?
-
All reviews and salaries posted to Glassdoor are anonymous to other users. You will never see us expose your personal information (user name or email) such that somebody might be able to identify you. We also take several additional measures to maintain your anonymity, but you also have responsibilities here too.
We ask that you be careful not to include any specific information in your posts (e.g., names of your manager, department, etc.) that might allow someone to identify you. We also suggest using the site from home and using your personal email address when registering.
And although this won't apply to most of you, we need to say it. If you happen to post illegal content or trade secrets, we could be legally required to provide any information we may have, including Internet protocol (IP) address and email address. So let's not go there.
- What protections are in place to protect my anonymity?
-
We take your anonymity very seriously. Not only will we never expose your user name or email to other users, we have also taken additional measures to protect your anonymity. For example, if you are the first or second employee to report a salary for a given job title, we will create an anonymous range around your reported salary to offer your additional anonymity while minimizing the difference between the range and the actual salary. We also review every post, and if we feel your anonymity is at risk we will not hesitate to pull the review from the site or possibly even change the job title associated with your review to "Anonymous." We would rather have fewer posts than risk the anonymity and trust of our users.
- What's an anonymous range?
-
If we only have one salary post for a job title, it makes it much harder to show the salary and still protect the employees' anonymity. So in that case, we create an anonymous range by adding and subtracting a small percentage from the reported salary. The percentage difference is randomly selected from within an acceptable range which allows us to offer additional anonymity while minimizing difference between the range and the employees' actual salary. And for all those cases where we have two salaries for a job title, we apply the same anonymous range — otherwise the minimum could be identified as one employees' salary and the maximum as another.
- How do I edit or remove a review or salary that I've already posted?
-
Unfortunately at the moment, we don't offer members the ability to edit or remove their review or salary. We understand this is a bit inconvenient (it is for us too!) and we'll have a better solution soon. In the meantime, if you were interested in removing or editing your review because you were concerned about your anonymity, just let us know by sending an email to content@glassdoor.com and we will pull your post down from the site.
- Why can't I find my review or salary on the site?
-
When we launched, we made a commitment to review every post to ensure the quality of our content. But this means it may take as long as 24-48 hours to review your post, and sometimes longer if we're seeing a lot of submissions. If you're not seeing your own post after a few days, it may also mean that your review or salary was rejected by our research team. Don't worry – even if your post is rejected for some reason you will still have full access to all the reviews and salaries of the community.
- What if I'm a student and have never had a job to review?
-
If you're a student and have never had a “real” job, don't worry - we've been there. We won't make you post a review or salary for a job that you've never had. Simply send an email from your schools .edu account to students@glassdoor.com and we'll set up an account for you with access to all the reviews and salaries shared by our community.
- How do you make sure ratings, reviews, and salaries are really from employees?
-
We make it clear reviews and salaries must be posted by a current employee or someone who was employed by the company within the last three years. Since our service is anonymous, we require our users certify that they actually work at the employer when they submit their review or salary. We trust our users to be honest about their employment, and we also happen to believe that it's easier to tell the truth than it is to make up lies.
But that's not to understate the importance of getting the “real” inside look, which is one reason why we require all users to verify their account via email before their posts are available to other users. This verification allows us to put additional measures in place to help identify suspicious users or posts, even if those cases are the exception rather than the rule. These measures, combined with community feedback and our commitment to review every post, allow us to have confidence that our information is really from employees.
- What should I say when I write my review?
-
Well, what do you think are the most important things people should know about your company? We want our reviews to be helpful to our other users, so we ask that everyone talk about a few good things, a few not so good things, and then offer your advice to management. That will help us keep the reviews balanced and constructive, but in the end it's really up to you. You'll see the most helpful reviews are thoughtful, detailed, and can only come from employees who have seen the company from the inside.
- How are the company ratings and CEO approval ratings calculated?
-
Our company and CEO approval ratings represent a summary of all the reviews left by employees.
For the company ratings, we average all the responses from our employee survey, including a question about overall employee satisfaction and questions relating to more specific workplace categories (including career opportunities, communication, compensation and benefits, morale, recognition and feedback, senior leadership, work-life balance, and fairness and respect).
For the CEO approval rating, it's just like the Presidential approval rating. A rating of 4 or 5 is considered “approve”, ratings of 1 or 2 is considered “disapprove”, and a rating of 3 is considered “no opinion.”
- How do I get a review or comment removed?
-
If you see a review, comment, or any user content that you feel is outside our Terms of Use or Community Guidelines (it's not enough to just disagree, it has to have crossed a line), we hope you'll let us know. Send us an email at content@glassdoor.com and we'll take appropriate action.
- Will the site work with my browser?
-
Glassdoor currently supports Internet Explorer 6.x and higher, Firefox 1.x and higher, and Safari.
For all browsers, we require cookies be enabled to create an account and ensure uninterrupted access to the site (see below for detailed instructions for enabling cookies). Employer FAQ's
- How do I use this service as an employer?
-
We all know annual surveys are expensive, administratively burdensome and often mistimed, leaving employees and employers struggling with how to make sense of the results and apply the feedback. We have developed Glassdoor to generate healthy and constructive discussion and recognize that the thoughtful participation by our community has a lot to offer your organization.
Specifically, Glassdoor can help you:
- Get free, real-time feedback. Supplement your own annual surveys, with a real time look at what your employees really think. This can help you quickly identify any issues and capitalize on your strengths.
- See how you stack up. Glassdoor let's you instantly see how you compare to the competition. This allows you to focus on the differentiators that matter most to your employees and prospective recruits.
- Get recognized for what matters most. If you're among the best on Glassdoor, that means something. Unlike “best of” lists, we provide unedited and unbiased accounts from employees, much like the people's choice of employer awards. This provides yet another valuable tool to help you recruit top talent.
- How can I get involved or provide feedback?
-
If you're interested in seeing what your employees are saying about your company, but not interested in posting a review or salary of your own, we can create a free employer account for you. Your employer account will not only allow you to see what your employees are saying about your company, but it will also allow you to comment on reviews posted for your company as an official 'employer representative.' Request an employer account.
In the months ahead we expect to continue introducing features to help employers engage more actively in this community. If you're interested in participating in occasional employer focus groups or receiving advance notice of upcoming employer-related features, please send an email to employeradvisors@glassdoor.com with your name, title, affiliation, contact details and a brief note about your role in the company. We'll add you to our Employer Advisors Panel and follow-up with you as we continue with our development and data collection.
- Can I delete a review or remove my entire company from the site?
-
No, you cannot delete a review or remove your company from the site. Any employer can be added to our database, and any employee may post a review or salary. But don't worry, we're reviewing every piece of content and have taken measures to help us identify questionable reviews or salaries. Further, any reviews found to be outside our Terms of Use or Community Guidelines will be immediately removed.
In the future, we expect to offer employers additional features that may allow you to manage some of the content yourselves, but for now if you feel a post is outside our Terms of Use or Community Guidelines, please let us know by sending an email to content@glassdoor.com and we will take appropriate action.
- Can I respond to a review or comment?
-
Of course! Remember, you're employees too. You can always create an account by posting your own review or salary, or you may request a free employer account which allows you to see what employees are saying about your company without having to post any content. Your employer account will also give you special credentials which allow you to comment on reviews posted for your company as an official 'employer representative.' Request an employer account.
- What can I do to get more reviews for my company?
We're glad you asked. If your employees love you, why wouldn't you want the world to know? The easiest way is to send an email to your employees recommending the service and inviting them to leave their post their own anonymous review or salary.
- Can I get a report of the data you've gathered for my company?
-
Since we've just entered our public beta, we do not have reporting mechanisms available as of yet. However, we do recognize how valuable this information can be for an employer and expect to be able to offer additional reporting in the future.
If you are interested in participating in discussions about how our data can be used by employers, please consider participating in our Employer Advisors Panel. Please send an email to employeradvisors@glassdoor.com with your name, title, affiliation, contact details and a brief note about your role in the company noting your interest in data reporting.
