How To Be An Exceptional Job Seeker In A Tough Market

If you’re searching for a job, you might have read up on some ways to be a good job seeker. But, do you know what makes you go from good to exceptional?

Here are a few ways to impress hiring managers, and land a job, that you may not have been doing:

Be realistic. Don’t waste your time applying for jobs you know you aren’t qualified for. In the same sense, don’t apply for any and every job you can. Find jobs that align with your skills, qualifications and experience. Look for companies that have a mission you believe in or are passionate about. Make sure to explicitly tell the hiring manager – through your cover letter and résumé – why you are a good fit for the opening. Don’t forget to mention previous accomplishments and results.

Be polite and persistent. You can complain and say that most hiring managers don’t get back to you about your application submission. But, did you try to contact them? Many job seekers make the mistake of leaving the hiring process completely up to the employer, whereas most candidates receive a job because of the rapport and relationship they have built with the manager through follow-ups, phone calls and e-mails.

Set goals. Are you looking for a certain type of organization to work for? A specific job position? What do you want to get out of your job search in the short-term and long-run? You need to clearly communicate your short-term and long-term goals to employers in your job search. Not only will it keep you more focused, but they can have a better feel for if you would fit in with their company and culture.

Leverage your contacts. You’ve heard that networking is a huge part of landing a job, right? How much are you really using the people you already know to help in your job search? Make a point to add your contacts on LinkedIn or Twitter and send updates as necessary. If you’re applying for a position at a company, look through to see if anyone you know works there, or if they have a friend or former co-worker that does. Although it may feel awkward, remember that many times a company’s position is filled through an employee referral of an acquaintance (not even a close friend or relative!). And, according to Glassdoor interview reviews, more than one out of 10 secured a job interview through an employee referral.

Although you may still be applying for jobs with hundreds of other applicants, know that targeting your search and being persistent will really pay off. After all, those candidates applying for 20 jobs a day aren’t really exceptional job seekers, are they?

What are some other ways you’ve stood out among other applicants?
