Top 25 Highest Rated CEOs 2012

Glassdoor is revealing its latest list of the Top 25 Highest Rated CEOs – the list is based entirely on feedback from employees who were asked one simple survey question: Do you approve of the way your CEO is leading the company? In the last year alone, more than 280,000 employees rated their CEO on Glassdoor.¹

So what stands out from this list of Top 25 Highest Rated CEOs? Below are just some of the highlights:

How Does Apple’s Tim Cook Compare to Steve Jobs?

While many speculated how Cook would be received by employees and how he would lead the tech giant, he seems to have settled in quite nicely, garnering a 97% approval. By comparison, when Steve Jobs stepped down in August 2011, his cumulative rating was 97% approval, though his rating between March 2010 and March 2011 was 95%. One Apple Employee (Cupertino, CA) comments, I think leadership is doing an amazing job. We have the best management team anywhere.”

HP CEO Winning Employee Support

Meg Whitman may not have achieved enough popularity among California voters during her run for governor of California, but she seems to be winning support from employees at Hewlett-Packard. Whitman is the only woman to break into the list of top rated CEOs with an 80% approval rating. And she is faring much better than her predecessors – Leo Apotheker garnered a 57% cumulative approval and Mark Hurd received a 34% cumulative approval. One Hewlett-Packard employee wrote that, “Mark Hurd badly impacted HP Values and people morale, but HP has got amazing people who kept on performing through salary cuts and CEO scandals. So my most sincere good luck to Meg and her leadership team to bring back some of the HP way.”

Several Finance Leaders Retain High Ratings In Tough Times

Despite public outcry over Wall Street’s excessive salaries and a very fervent Occupy movement, U.S. Bank employees give CEO Richard Davis an 88% approval rating, and JPMorgan Chase employees give  CEO Jamie Dimon an 87% approval. Interestingly,Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, who was criticized recently by former executive Greg Smith in the New York Times, garners an 89% approval rating, which is down eight points from his 97% approval last year².

Troops Salute Military Leaders

The leaders of the US Air Force and US Army pull rank and make it on this list of well-liked leaders. Michael Donley, Secretary of the US Air Force, receives an 86% approval rating. As a member of the US Air Force notes, “Most supervisory level people only want to see you exceed and will work as hard as you do, sometimes harder, to see you attain your goals. The only ceiling for advancement, is the ceiling that you build over yourself.” And, John McHugh, Secretary of the US Army, receives an 84% approval rating.

Sad that Intel Corp’s CEO Paul Otellini is %6 and missed top5 – he is good.  But not all his group VPs are good (few have chronies in key position, right position but ill-qualified people, and good gets shunted out or down-down and people operate in “FEAR”, she need to depart)

  • http://twitter.com/realjustinkim Justin Kim

where is Jeff Bezos? Shouldn’t he be top 5??

Jeff Bozos is a slave driver. No way he would ever make any list. Besides I believe Amazon
Is currently under investigation for its warehouse poor working conditions surrounding it fullfillment centers.

Just another reminder that there are too many men running the corporations that run this country. The stories I hear from my female friends working in the corporate world are astonishing. I don’t know whether to commend female CEOs or suggest they go into therapy.

  • Alicia Somoza Caballero

You think Im in moderation? anyway Im AC Talent Agency/Alicia Caballero view me  in Facebook like Alicia Somoza Caballero yes I do pay for my Internet website. aliciacalif@gmail.com thumbs up.

Gosh – too many men? Total male in the workforce is significantly higher than total female in the workforce.

Plus this survey highlights 25 CEOs only. There are quite a number of women CEO in the world today.

  • Imagine That!

Glassdoor is complete BS. Try and find a review of a company that is negative. How realisitic or valuable is a review if they are all screened and filtered so that all you see are positive comments. What a waste of time to even register.

  • J x

    Crap

  • Fdeen

IBM is oppressive and exploitive, employees know to work like dogs for measly bonuses, like $250/head.

  • Calucascal

Go to LucasFilm if you want NEGATIVE.  The Dragon Lady running it is single-handedly destroying the company and her 39% will only get lower.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/TSKCCJV4ZNC2OJYSO5BEHRZVRM Mocha Man

IDG has a grand total of 11 reviews . The survey requires 100+ as they clearly state .

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/TSKCCJV4ZNC2OJYSO5BEHRZVRM Mocha Man

The survey is based on website user reviews, so you’d have to ask each person what they were thinking when clicked .

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/TSKCCJV4ZNC2OJYSO5BEHRZVRM Mocha Man

agreed . 240 company ratings , 180 CEO ratings . Maybe the ratings didn’t come in the right time frame .

you should try looking . the only thing I see are negative reviews of companies . look at EnerNOC , one of the more active GlassDoor forums .

  • Dereklukasik

Dan Hesse? Now I know this list is bullshit for sure!

  • Jnoel02

This is rated by employees. Id give dan the nod being an employee. Turned the company around. Leader in customer sat, net positive growth again.

I wonder where Bob Iger falls on this list.  With in house changes this past year I can’t imagine him having an extraordinary rating, but it’s Disney.

  • Martin Bailey

    Shame there’s only one woman!

  • Anonymous

    Indeed!

  • Aditya

A few more people will certainly make this list like NVIDIA Jensen Huang. In all, this is one contentious topic!

  • Mark

Indeed, Glasdoor looks more and more like a marketing tool for some big companies. I’ve been in some Fortune 50 companies that have high ratings and heard plenty of complains and seen people leaving.

  • Mark

…and I’m not implying that Glassdoor is filtering comments. Maybe it’s simply attracting fanboy employees, or maybe some companies spend time creating fake reviews.

  • Shawnmariepaul

The lack of women on this list (yeah Ms. Whitman!) is very disheartening.

  • Costco Employee

As a Costco employee, I am amazed that our leadership is not represented on the list. With a > 87% employee retention rate, most with double-digit tenure, coupled with the policy to promote from within and an amazing percentage of insured employees, it seems quite an oversight. Additionally, the ability to grow the business to $97B (FY12 est.) in a challenged economy deserves to be lauded. Finally, the first 3 of our 6 company mandates are:

    1. Take care of the member (customer)
    2. Take care of the employee
    3. Take care of our vendors

Jim Sinegal, our founder who retired at the end of last year, “it’s not pure altruism. It’s good business.”

    Seriously???  Really?  SEriously????

A big chunk of those companies OUTSOURCE to other countries or have OFFICES in other countries which is LEADING to America’s hardships in the economy and the lack of jobs in this country.  I’m sick to death of people trying to “globalize” us.  If you don’t want to see the list because it’s American companies, don’t look.  If everyone in other countries would pay attention to themselves instead of criticizing America for what you think we should be doing, you wouldn’t CARE about OUR list.

  • guest

Xerox also has a Dragon Lady at the helm if your looking for extensive lists of employees that despise their CEO.

Ursula should be the poster child for corrupt CEOs that rape their company for personal gain.

  • Gdoll

This is true, they are slashing salaries to move people to “delivery centers” where the talent is limited.  Those of us that are able, get trained and get out.  It’s a sinking ship and they are sacrificing quality for profits. Very intelligent and experienced people have lost their jobs only to have someone in a center take it over for a lot less money.  I hope I get out soon.

  • Caryluber

the woman issue is and remains disappointing…  but no Microsoft?

  • Mel Loomis

    Jeff Immelt? Seriously?

What about John Chambers of Cisco.. He has to be one among top 5

  • Robert

BS of course, go see if UPS, Kroger or any big company with fulfillment centers is treating their employees better and giving them full health benefits (even for part time employee).
The life in those big distribution center is never rosy but Amazon has nothing to be ashamed of in that regard.

  • Dutchie

Microsoft CEO………..? You must be joking, he is the laughing stock of the industry and his employees know it. The question is when he is going to be replaced.

  • BuckeyePhil

I recently received a rejection letter from Lowes that I was not qualified to hold a seasonal position. I laugh at this as I am a 22 year veteran with leadership over thousands and holding a Top Secret clearance. So, I e-mailed the CEO of Lowes to provide feedback and to lambaste their hiring practices and lack of support for our military veterans. I did nor receive a reply. This only shows one of the reasons he is not on this list. Good leaders do not stick their heads in the sand when confronted with issues, they lead their people out of them! PLEASE BOYCOTT LOWES IN SUPPORT OF OUR VETERANS!!!!

Actually to Meg Whitman being on this list was a surprise. I do agree that it was surprising to see no women on the list.

  • GAsd

    Women make the worst CEOs

  • taliDan

There’s nothing stopping you from making a global one if you want to invest that kind of time and money into doing the research. :)

  • RayUK

You are right. The fact that it is mainly the larger companies on the list shows they are just counting positive comments. Obviously the larger the company the more positive comments they are going to get. If they included negative comments it would be a completely different story.

  • RayUK

If Glassdoor are going to limit their list to US companies they shouldn’t be sending their emails internationally and annoying every non-US citizen with stuff that’s totally irrelevant to us.

  • Strangereading

Keep in mind that these rating were generated by responses from 280,000 people responding to questions posted on Glassdoor, that’s not going to yield vary accurate results from a statistician’s point of view–if you are a statistician and can share insights on this that would be great. For example, we don’t know if Glassdoor limited the results to U.S. companies, or if that’s an accurate representation of the people who responded.

Glassdoor does state that “The report [...] is based on current CEOs with at least 100 ratings from their own employees over the past year.”

The accuracy of polls is always a question in itself. This particular poll relies solely on the participants being members of Glassdoor, which significantly limits its accuracy… but then glassdoor might say that it’s accurate given the population of Glassdoor members.

  • Annashumate

Hmmm… Interesting that all but one are men.  Not complaining, just find it interesting.

  • Marti Lament

Total agreement on IBM -    thats possiblly because that this list did not include international companies and IBM’s  us  presence  is shrinking   fast.  their  target growth is in low cost  ( read  overseas)  talent markets.  they have divested  form US  talent. Shame on you IBM.

  • chh

Don’t feel bad – my sister is a perfectly normal, college educated high school teacher and got rejected from wal-mart after the personality test.

  • Stuntmaster5678

How did the CEO of the Army make the list? I can’t speak for the Air Force but if the Army can make the list – there’s hope for anyone …. Yep, pretty much Anyone.

  • ChriscalvertfromwhiteplainsNY

Perhaps you weren’t qualified for a seasonal position when you say things like “did nor receive a reply”. :)

  • http://twitter.com/Ladyred133 ladyred133

I think the reason you weren’t hired was you were over qualified…you applied for a “seasonal position” those kinds of jobs are usually reserved for illegal aliens.  I support my veterans with my gratitude, my heartfelt all consuming love, and undying allegiance but a 22 year veteran with more experience in his pinky just wont’ get hired for a day labor job.  You’re worth so much more…

  • http://twitter.com/Ladyred133 ladyred133

Hello?  people WALMART?  …an educated high school teacher again is applying for an illegal alien job…get real…I know we all need jobs…but you are worth so much more than what Walmart or Lowes can offer!  You know all the jobs that could get us by until we find a real job are being given to people who the only thing they have going for them is their personality…and that they can speak bilingual.  Where has Our America gone?

  • http://twitter.com/Ladyred133 ladyred133

     isn’t it?

And I assume it’s because women still aren’t making it to the top of the big companies named here. I must say that the very best boss I ever had was a woman (as was the boss who was a nightmare from hell).

  • Oligarc

jajaja, TOMA Dyd y las 2 reputas que te parieron!!!, that’s the spirit, Robert!!

  • Amandlatoo

I was wondering the same thing. Same for US Army. What about the Navy and Marines? The corporatization (leading to privatization) of America.

I think Camerastring has it right, though.

  • Amandlatoo

Interesting. I’ve always heard Oracle was a horrible place to work. Employees treated like s#!t. I guess that doesn’t count in these ratings.

  • Rainmaker

Funny….I dont see Brito’s name here? maybe if you run the WORST CEO’s according to Employees!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Planting/510273586 Eric Planting

i feel you, for a different set of circumstances though, I have a MS in mech eng.  I have to say its almost poison in this job market, everyone and their dog just thinks, “works hard, overqualified, won’t stay” which would be right, if there was anywhere to go.  I’ve been hit with questions like “you’ve worked so hard for your degree, are you sure you want this job?” and statements where they laugh and say you have a masters degree by some pissant little art degree holders.  Anyway, I did find a couple employers that will hire overqualified people, skywest and fedex where i currently work, so far fedex has been pretty fair to me, and I’ll be up to apply internally for engineering positions this month… after a year or moving boxes.

  • M Vandermause

Sir, that is referred to as a “typo”.  Look at the keyboard on your computer, “R” is directly next to “T”.  Way to go champ.

  • Barbicardiff

where are the women and minority CEOs?

  • Barbicardiff

    there are no teaching jobs

  • Barbicardiff

    hear hear

  • Nancy_Forsyth

I’m shocked that only 1 of the top 25 is a woman.  While it is well known that women still face a glass ceiling for the top jobs, those that have made it to the top are pretty amazing people.  I’m curious to hear opinions as to why women are missing from this list.

  • Nancy_Forsyth

I’d be interested to read the research that leads to your conclusion.  Everything I read and experience points to just the opposite.

  • Teftwo

First off illegal aliens would not be hired by these companies.  Second, are you so out of touch that you don’t realize “over qualified” applicants are finding it difficult if not impossible to find work in more appropriate positions?  At least this person is attempting to work and not be supported by the Government.  Oh, and the guy that pointed out the typo…what a tool.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/ERXO5EI5ES2QQU7DALAL6SUFZI SRay

This is a flawed survey.  It is based on the number of employees that are responding on Glassdoor.  So large companies are going to be the only ones making the list.  A better method would be for Glassdoor to normalize the survey against the total number of employees in the responses.

  • Bashlal

apple employes must be out of their minds to rate current ceo higher than jobs. employees are just like animals the most important thing for them is how their master is throwing bones at them. not everyone gives their CEOs credit for who they are and what they are capable of doing. this new guy at apple has yet to create anything phenomenal and is just enjoying the momentum that was generated by steve jobs. he must demonstrate his genius soon if he wants his company to stay in the race.

I liked Ebay a lot better when Meg Whitman was the CEO.  I can imagine that Hewlett-Packard likes her, too.  Good luck Ms. Whitman.

  • Usa

US has no value without china, India, japan, and Gulf. didn’t u read what each and every product of apple says ‘designed in California assembled in china’. that is the crux of story. people in USA have the ideas but no hands to execute them. that is why you will always hear wise Americans talk about globalization which is = survival

  • Anonymous

This is not an article about affirmative action. It’s about how employees rate their leaders. If there is a disproportionate number of white men ranked here, relative to all CEOs, then apparently the problem lies in performance or employee prejudice, not the survey.

  • Brand81

do you even know what an illegal alien is? they can’t get jobs at places like Walmart or Lowes. And seriously how much more insulting can you get? People need jobs, badly. The application process for Walmart is actually very extensive surprisingly. Also, the people who are working at Walmart are not always uneducated or just bilingual, they just get lazy and figure Walmart will hire them. Most of them are just cashiers and are actually making a pretty good buck for it being Walmart. And before you go telling me that I am an illegal alien or I work at Walmart, I don’t. I have a very nice job in which I busted my butt to get to the top. I have a college degree from a state school and as most graduates know, it is pretty difficult to get a job that pays your worth.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tom.wetzel1 Tom Wetzel

I would not expect to receive a reply sent to the CEO of any major company.  It is not their job to explain why you were rejected.  Asking people to boycott Lowes simply because you weren’t hired there is ridiculous.  If you can prove discrimination in their hiring practices then take them to court.  Otherwise, just accept the fact that the position was filled by someone who apparently was a better fit for the company’s needs.  There is nothing personal about it.

  • Dookie

    You are an idiot.

  • Kgphelps

That’s right! US is the center of the universe. F*** the foreigners hating. Btw, apple is the largest company in the world last time I checked… So what do you arrogant smart asses from Europe have to say about that?

  • S_e_sleeper

    Eric,
That is insulting. I have a BS as an art major and a Masters in Elementary Education. I could not find work as a teacher …you want to talk about prejudice..Try to get  a job in rural Tennessee..it is all in who you know.

I worked for a company for almost 10 yrs..and when the owner sold it, the new people slowly got rid of permanent full time people. They now have one or two full time people and the rest of the people are temporaries.

There is a lot of prejudice against people with degrees..saying you need a better job…where are the jobs? I have been unemployed for two years. So now I have four problems, education, age (54) and being unemployed for more than a year. Congratulations on obtaining a job.

  • S_e_sleeper

oops…I forgot the fourth reason..so before anyone says you cannot count..I started having seizures the last year or two that I worked. They only came two or three a year. During the time I have been unemployed, they now come every two months. If you are know driving laws in TN, you cannot drive for 6 months after a seizure. Therefore, I cannot drive! I live 35 miles from a town with job opportunities.

The other side of those minds is that they do not question hierarchy… There are no riots in the US Air Force J

  • Virajdhawan

You are an idiot man! Have you seen what’s happened to the USA. Shitholes.

Can you see in this vv conversation, you get to know there are no jobs… People are crying / begging for jobs !! Wake up man there’s a bette world out there.

    USA is shit!

  • Gvalentino1

How come Unilever never makes any kind of list like this?  Whether it’s top companies to work for or top CEO’s?

  • Root Sandra

Fedex sucks! They should be a shame of what they do to the workers. I should write a book. The things Fedex gets a way with. Run and run fast!

  • Ejratl07

good lord.  This is a pathetic state of the nation.  I’m so sorry for all of this with work/ work search.  I get it.  2 degrees from 2 of the best schools in the nation.  156,000. student loans.  my industry was hit very hard after 9/11…Recovery time it took after that lasted only 2 yrs. until economy tanked again, and was hit hard the past 2 + yrs.    Please vote for Romney!

  • Dfanton12

Hey mark must have recieved more than 250. I guess being a cheap whore is a good job now a days.

  • bouge75

While I agree that he most likely wasn’t hired because he was overqualified, illegal aliens DO NOT hold those jobs. Lowes is a major corporation and you MUST provide proof of citizenship or a green card/work permit to obtain employment within 72 hours of employment.

  • bouge75

I feel your pain Phil, but the reality is, the CEO of Lowes most likely receives a gazillion pieces of mail daily. He probably has at least 2 admins who sorts and filters through the mail. I bet your letter never even made it to his desk. Your letter was most likely forwarded to HR and then HR chucked it. Why???? Because they cannot respond to the amount of unsolicited mail they receive regarding employment on a daily basis. If it were a small operation, perhaps you would have received a response. I’m not saying it’s right, but that’s how it works.

  • Ladygeek

Actually, English is the direct descendent of Latin, Greek and German.  I learned that when I took those language courses.  I almost never have to look up a word in a dictionary and when there’s a new word, I can usually decipher it’s meaning as well.

  • Jackson

Really the CEO has probably never heard of you because he is not in charge or affiated with the hiring of “seasonal positions”, therefore the fact that you want to say the entire company does not support our troop and veterans is absolutely ridiculous.
Thank you for your sacrifice and good luck with the job search

  • Brij

i think NOKIA’s CEO Stephen Elop should have been on the list, coz… the way he has turned around by taking huge risks … the results are yet to be reviled so as to know if his decision were right or wrong… but the stand he took is commendable.>!!!! ..

    Regards,
    Brij

Voting for a particular presidential candidate is a short-sighted solution at best. Perhaps you should vote out the presidents of those top schools that you attended.
From my experience multiple degree holders lack two things: adaptability and experience. When your target industry crashes, those with adaptable skill sets land on their feet. If you stay stuck in the mindset of “I worked hard for my degrees and deserve a positon in my chosen industry”, you will either fail or land a position that will not meet your unrealistic expectations.

While I have hired over-qualified applicants, I would never hire a “grossly over-qualified” one.  I learned this from years of hiring experience.  If you commanded thousands, I would never hire as a greeter or cashier.  I know it’s the job you think you can do, but you will likely not be successful — and hiring is not a test bed.

    My rhetorical questions:
What made you think that going 156K in debt would be anyone’s problem but your own?  Did anyone at those “best schools in the nation” guarantee you a job?  Did they teach you how to appropriately analyze the job market?

I live in the real world and understand that we need jobs in order to earn money and thrive. My degree is in economics. I’ve worked in various capacities in banking, non-profits, & HR. I never got the job that I thought I wanted while earning multiple degrees from highly competitive schools. It’s called a career.  Sometimes you make lots of cash & love your gig, sometimes you don’t.  Hold yourselves accountable for your own success/failure.

Nobody has a pension these days unless you’re in a unionized job. No white collar employees have had pensions for 30 years. We’re all on 401(k)s now. So when you start babbling about pensions, I wonder if you really know what you’re talking about.

  • ROBBWALTERS

Not to be a fanboy, but to my earlier post about my Costco CEO, Jim Sinegal, I have traveled with him and seen him personally call several members back to address their concerns. And, when other would be better suited to respond, would send the letter (email, etc.) to another executive to resolve.

Having been called upon to do so myself, I can tell you these “Jim letters” (as we call them) are given our fastest and highest attention. We value our members and their concerns. And in addressing them, no employee would ever be castigated for going above and beyond, no matter the cost. It’s our corporate culture.

That’s why, despite the opportunities presented to perhaps make a few more bucks or a greater title, I’ve remained for 23 years. There are no gray areas. Just a clear and distinct knowledge of what’s right and wrong.

  • veteran crybaby

Maybe they rejected you because they didn’t need a leader, they just need somebody to clean the bathrooms and put stuff on the shelf???  Maybe they didn’t hire you because you jump to conclusions?  I have a SCI clearance and got a job at Macy’s…  Maybe you can try to get part time work at the Macy’s?

  • crybaby veteran

I’ve never seen castigated in a sentence before… hmmm castigation…

You’re  overqualified. They tell me all the time with my B.S. psychology degree as I was trying to get a job in retail because “I have no experience”

Are you head of HR or Corporate Communications?

  • LS

No boycott, here.  I agree with the other poster that you may have been over-qualified. Nothing personal – you may be a excellent candidate – BUT – hiring someone simply because they’re a veteran is unacceptable. I’ve yet to work with a veteran or member of the reserves/nat’t guard who is an exceptional employee. In fact, as much as I hate to say it, most of them are the laziest people in the building. My last job, my employer went on a hiring spree for veterans and the ones on my team were ill equipped to do their jobs. The ones that were hired directly into management have the worst management skills I’ve ever encountered. In my current job, one of my teammates constantly reminds everyone he’s a veteran, meanwhile, he’s the laziest guy on the team – always standing around, surfing the internet, talking/texting his wife.
I wish you luck but don’t use your military history as a reason everyone should hire you.

Accenture, Pricewaterhouse, Ernst&Young….no Deloitte.  Not surprising….

  • missmj

illegal aliens?..sorry, many people get hired for seasonal positions, Lowes may have looked at it all differently- like who will stay and who will not stay, or they chose someone who had less experience. I am not taking up for Lowes because I know companies can become very misleading when it comes to hiring.

  • missmj

Your a young Vet. Thank you for your support! My brothers are also Vets.

Sorry to hear that- please visit my website-http://jabwebofficelive.com and subscribe- hopefully you will find something soon. Let me know if I can help.
As I replied to another user-Lowes may have been seeking someone with less experience, or chose someone who they knew will stay or not…depending on their needs.
