Does a Green Company Mean a Satisfied Company?

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently released a list of the Top 50 companies who purchase the most green power today in the U.S. as part of the Green Power Partnership. These green power purchases help reduce the environmental impacts of electricity use and support the development of new renewable generation capacity nationwide.

But what we wanted to find out is if there is any correlation between a green company and a satisfied workforce. We looked at how these top rated environmentally-friendly companies are rated by their employees. The table below lists the top 12 companies (with 20 or more company reviews) and their corresponding company and CEO approval ratings based on employee feedback.

While there is a wide range of findings when looking at how these companies rate according to employees, what’s interesting to note is the fact that only four of these top 12 green companies (Intel, PepsiCo, Whole Foods and Cisco) have CEOs whose approval ratings are above 50%. Among the EPA’s list the US Air Force and Whole Foods receive the highest company ratings, 4.0 and 3.8 respectively.

Another observation we caught is the newcomer to the EPA ‘s list, Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has made some significant strides throughout the past year to become more active with their environmental efforts and are now ranked at number 15. However we did note that despite the eco-conscious efforts made by the company, Wal-Mart’s CEO has a modest 34% approval rating and the company receives a neutral 3.4 rating.

Glassdoor Makes it Easier to Find Salary and Job Information in Areas Important to You

We’ve made some improvements to Glassdoor.com that makes it easier for our community members to find out for free salary and company reviews in the locations that matter most to them. Want to know what it is like to work Bank of America in Charlotte, North Carolina or in San Francisco, CA? Or do you want to know what a software engineer salary in San Francisco is? Simply specify a location in our drop down menu when you start your search and you will only receive employee salaries, ratings and/or reviews for that location.

This makes it easier to compare employee opinions from location to location and evaluate how they compare and contrast. For example, employee ratings of Accenture and its CEO vary widely by location. Employees in headquarters rate the company and CEO much higher than in other locations, indicating it’s better to be closer to the Accenture power source. The table shows the differences in Accenture’s headquarters, versus all other offices and specifically San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Employees in the San Francisco and Washington DC office rate the company 8% lower than employees in the headquarter office located in New York. Even more telling is that the approval rating for Accenture CEO Bill Green drops is 24% across non-headquarter locations compared to the 81% he has in HQ.

Counter to what we see with Accenture, Dell employees outside the headquarter office in Round Rock, Texas report higher marks for the company and its CEO. Employees in Dell headquarters report a company rating of 3.0 and only 50% approve of the job CEO Michael S. Dell is doing. In Nashville, TN, however, Dell employees rate the company as 3.7 and Michael Dell has an 80% approval rating. Makes you wonder what the people in the headquarter location know that others don’t?

Then there are companies like Apple that are pretty consistent all around (In this case, loved).
