Glassdoor.com Employees’ Choice Awards: 2011 Best Places To Work Winners Revealed

We’re proud to announce the results of the 3^rd Annual Employees’ Choice Awards which recognizes the 50 Best Places to Work for 2011. Unlike other workplace awards, our awards are not about company financials and growth rates nor does it involve elaborate self-nomination packages. The Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards are simply based on the opinions and ratings of company employees.

This year the #1 Best Place to Work for 2011 is a company that has changed the way many of us communicate and share information – Facebook. This Silicon Valley powerhouse brings in a 4.6 company rating and CEO Mark Zuckerberg receives a 96% approval rating. Facebook’s company rating along with high ratings in other areas like compensation & satisfaction, employee morale and work/life balance all contributed to making this the highest rated employer on Glassdoor over the past year.

Following Facebook is last year’s top Best Place to Work, Southwest Airlines, which received a 4.4 company rating, followed by Bain & Company at a 4.3 company rating. Closing out the top five, both with a 4.0 company rating are General Mills (#1 in 2009) and Edelman.

Best Places to Work vs. 100 Best Companies to Work For 2010 – Comparing Glassdoor and Fortune Rankings

Today Fortune released their list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For 2010”, and we wanted to do a little side by side comparison to see how their list stacks up against Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work. While both lists rely on employee feedback, Glassdoor’s list exclusively represents Employees’ Choice as it takes into account all the anonymous company reviews submitted throughout the year, instead of a short period of time, and does not allow companies to nominate themselves – employees do that through surveys in which they rate and review their employer*.

What we found most interesting was that Glassdoor’s Best Place to Work, Southwest Airlines, was absent from their list, and our #2 slot, General Mills, was ranked #90. It was #1 on our list last year, and barely made Fortune’s rankings at #99. The number one company on Fortune’s listing, SAS, did not make the Best Places to Work top 50 because it had too few reviews to qualify, but it does have a 4.0 rating on Glassdoor, and the CEO, Jim Goodnight, has a 73% approval rating. Fortune’s #2 company, Edward Jones, was also lauded by employees on Glassdoor, however, it was #24 on our list.

Surprisingly Apple, which has been a mainstay on Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work and Top Rated CEO lists, was also missing from among Fortune’s ranks. It was also interesting to see Genetech noted as #19 – while most employees surveyed on Glassdoor as “satisfied” with their company, new CEO Pascal Soriat has a low 28% approval rating, which made Genentech ineligible for the company from Glassdoor’s list. (Last year, Genentech ranked #17 on the 2009 Best Places to Work list under then CEO Art Levinson, who had a 94% approval rating)

In all, only 10 of Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work cracked Fortune’s top 50, and 21 companies in total that were honored by Glassdoor made their “100 Best Companies to Work For 2010”.

The Next 100 Years

Got to love the holidays, a great time to spend time with family, watch bowl games, read a few books and consider the upcoming year and what’s next. I read two interesting books over the holiday: James Bradley’s The Imperial Cruise – the story of Teddy Roosevelt and our relationship with Asia, and George Friedman’s The Next 100 Years. It takes a brave and confident person to forecast what’s ahead for the next 100 years for our globe politically and economically. Friedman has the background and enough ‘correct’ forecasts that he is listened to carefully by governments and corporations all over the world.

Starting in the next few years and really manifesting itself from 2020 to 2030 will be a global war for talent. Friedman projects that due to mortality rates and retiring boomers the world over, countries will be forced to entice and compete for skilled and unskilled talent to keep their economies moving in the right direction.

Why should this be of interest to us readers at Glassdoor? Well, whether you are currently working, looking for work or considering strategic paths for your company’s short and long term future, it is vital to know that talent plays an important role on the global stage for the next 90 years. Gives us pause to consider what role we or our companies will play on the global stage. And 2020 is coming up faster than we’d like to think.

Read the book if you want a unique view on the future. I can’t say that all will occur the way Friedman prescribes, but he certainly has an interesting set of arguments to support his views.

Glassdoor Reveals Top 50 Best Places to Work, 2010: Southwest Airlines Ranked #1

We are proud to announce the winners of the 2^nd annual Glassdoor.com Employees’ Choice Awards for Top 50 Best Places to Work. The Glassdoor Best Places to Work list is based on the employee sentiment of their respective employers from throughout the past year¹. With all the economic ups and downs, employee opinion of a company is becoming an increasingly important and valuable barometer of how well a company treats its workforce during good times — or in more troubling times like we’ve seen most recently.

Highlights from the 2010 Best Places to Work Awards include:

Southwest Airlines beat out last year’s top Best Place to Work winner – General Mills. Southwest garners a 4.7 company rating and CEO Gary Kelly has a 94% approval rating. We think Southwest Airlines Flight Attendee based in Oakland, CA said it best when discussing why the company is a great company to work for: “SWA knows that the employee is just as important as the customer.”

However despite the fact that General Mills dropped one spot in the Best Place to Work ranks, the cereal manufacturer CEO Ken Powell took a one percentage point increase in his approval rating (97%) compared to this time last year, giving him the distinction of highest rated CEO on the list. General Mills also held on to its impressive company rating of 4.5 (very satisfied) for two consecutive years.

Coming in as the 3^rd Best Place to Work is newcomer Slalom Consulting, which has a 4.1 company rating while CEO Tony Rojas has a notable 81% approval rating. A Slalom Consulting SharePoint Consultant (Atlanta, GA) writes: “A great place to work if you want to grow your career without sacrificing your work/life balance!” Top five veteran Bain & Company comes in at #4 falling from #2 spot last year as its company rating slid from 4.5 last year to 4.3. Following closely at #5 is another management consultant, McKinsey & Company, moving up from #12 last year as its company rating inched up to 4.1 from 4.0.

In addition, some other interesting facts regarding the list:

62% of companies made Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work list two consecutive years, including: General Mills, Google, Goldman Sachs, Apple, Whole Foods and Marriott just to name a few. Those that fell off include: Netflix, Nike and Genentech.
Roughly one-third of those on the list last year climbed up in ratings despite the tough employment climate this year. Only 12% of companies on the 2010 Best Places to Work list received a very satisfied (4.1+) company rating compared to 18% in 2009; The remainder of the 2010 Best Places to Work companies received satisfied ratings of 3.5 or greater.
6% of CEOs on the 2010 Best Places to Work list have an approval rating over 90% compared to 14% in 2009. Of those over 90% this year are: General Mills CEO Ken Powell (97% approval), Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly (94% approval) and Apple’s Steve Jobs (91% approval).
Of the most concentrated states with headquarter locations for 2010 Best Places to Work Winners: 20% are located in California, 12% Texas and 10% Massachusetts.
Industries sectors most frequently represented on 2010 list include: Business Services (18%), Computer Hardware and Software (16%), Financial Services (8%) and Insurance (6%)
New York City was the most frequently represented HQ city on the list: McKinsey & Company (Rank: 5), Goldman Sachs (Rank: 16) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (Rank: 49)

Glassdoor Q3 CEO Watch List Report: Highest and Lowest CEO Approval Ratings Reveal Employee Opinions May be Influenced by Proximity to CEO

The Glassdoor quarterly report* on CEO performance is out, and it seems the down economy and internal actions may have impacted the popularity of CEOs across the board. More than 60% of CEOs on both the highest and lowest rated lists — ranking 25 CEOs each — recorded a decline in overall approval ratings since the beginning of July while less than 25% moved up. New analysis this quarter reveals that, at many companies, opinions of the CEOs vary widely depending on whether an employee works close to the power center in the corporate headquarters or further removed from the CEO in a satellite office.

In fact, 68% of CEOs on both the highest and lowest rated lists have higher approval ratings from employees in headquarters than employees working in non-HQ offices. A perfect example of this phenomenon is Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, who happens to be one of the highest rated CEOs on Glassdoor. While his score has slid from 91% approval in Q2 to 76% in Q3, most of the decrease has to do with an influx of negative reviews from Netflix operations in Oregon – as of early October, Hastings had a 92% approval rating among headquarter employees and 55% approval rating aggregated from employees in other locations.

Below highlights some of the most noted variances among those on the highest and lowest rated CEOs:

The CEO Watch List

Since we began reporting CEO approval ratings last year, six CEOs on the “Watch List” have left the building. While no CEOs have been unseated since the Q1 report there has been some movement. Frost & Sullivan CEO Krishna Srinivasan has moved onto the list as the least favored CEO with a 4% approval and 84% disapproval rating; Srinivasan’s approval rating is up just one percentage point from early July. Seven CEOs have been on this list since December 2008: Office Depot’s Steve Odland (7% approval, 80% disapproval); Rain Bird’s Anthony LaFetra (11% approval, 72% disapproval); CSAA Inter-Insurance Bureau’s James Pouliot (13% approval, 72% disapproval); Affiliated Computer Services ‘s Lynn Blodgett (17% approval, 57% disapproval); Amgen’s Kevin Sharer (18% approval, 54% disapproval); eBay’s John Donahoe (20% approval, 53% disapproval); and, Sun Microsystems’ Jonathan Schwartz (21% approval, 57% disapproval).

Of these, there are some notable differences among employees by location. For example, Affiliated Computer Services Lynn Blodgett, who has 17% approval rating overall has a 36% approval rating from employees in the headquarter office, but just 10% approval rating outside HQ. However, Corporate Executive Board CEO Thomas Monahan receives only half as much support in his HQ office than in remote locations. In the HQ office located in Arlington, VA, Monahan garners an 18% approval rating whereas elsewhere he garners a 36% approval rating.

Highest Rated CEOs

Four out of the top five CEOs reported in Q2 report remain among the top five highest rated CEOs this quarter, this includes: General Mills’ Ken Powell (96% approval, 3% disapproval), Northwestern Mutual’s Edward Zore (90% approval, 3% disapproval), Apple’s Steve Jobs (90% approval, 4% disapproval) and Google’s Eric Schmidt (87% approval, 4% disapproval). Only General Mills CEO Ken Powell has been among the top five highest rated CEOs for three consecutive quarters. And, although Google CEO Eric Schmidt holds steady with an 87% approval rating, we did observe that his ratings can quickly fluctuate between our quarterly reports as we noted when we compared 30-day trailing averages with Yahoo’s Carol Bartz.

It’s also worth noting that only three CEOs among the highest rated list had an uptick in their approval ratings this quarter compared to last; These CEOs each achieved a one percentage point improvement this quarter: Chevron’s Dave O’Reilly (79% approval, 11% disapproval), Marriott’s Bill Marriott Jr. (75% approval, 15% disapproval) and Costco’s Jim Sinegal (74% approval, 12% disapproval).

As we mentioned earlier Netflix caught our attention for the notable variances in approval rating by office location, however they were not alone. For example, FactSet’s Phillip Hadley has a 93% approval rating from employees in the headquarter office located in Norwalk, CT and a combined 76% approval rating from employees working in non-headquarter locations. Also Disney’s HQ employees have higher opinions of CEO Bob Iger with 78% approval rating compared to the 65% approval from employees working outside of the Burbank headquarters. On the flip side, salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff receives a 100% approval rating from employees working outside of the San Francisco HQ and 70% from those who sit in the power center.

Also of note is that NIKE CEO Mark G. Parker seems to be on a steady downward slope in terms of his approval ratings. As reported in the end of March, he held a 90% approval rating that fell to 85% in July, and as of October 1, it’s 79%.

Glassdoor CEOs – Who’s Up? Who’s Down? Who’s Gone?

The last time we reported on CEO ratings on Glassdoor.com was at the end of 2008 when we looked at the Naughty and Nice CEOs of 2008. Now that the first quarter is over, we’ve updated the Glassdoor.com lists of highest and lowest rated CEOs, which includes the CEO Watch List (a list of lowest rated CEOs) and highest rated CEOs. Interestingly, a number of the Watch List’s previous members have – uh, well – moved on. (Most recently AOL’s Randy Falco).

At of the end of March, the CEO with the lowest approval rating is Office Depot‘s CEO Steve Odland, who has a 5% approval rating and 83% disapproval rating. Following is LexisNexis‘ Andy Prozes at 7%, dropping 6 percentage points and who also holds an 83% disapproval rating. Between Odland and Prozes, they hold the highest disapproval rating among the least popular CEOs. Rounding out the bottom three is United Airlines CEO Glenn Tilton with a 9% approval rating and an 83% disapproval rating, according to his employees. As we’ve collected more data, eligibility for the CEO Watch List has expanded and 10 CEOs are newcomers among the 25 lowest rated, these include: Jim Crowe of Level 3 Communications with a 16% approval rating, Jack Potter of the USPS with a 22% approval rating and Mike Laphen of Computer Sciences who has a 22% approval rating.

Since we began tracking the CEO Watch List in August 2008, six members have ‘left the building’ at their respective employers, including AOL‘s Falco, Wal-Mart’s H. Lee Scott Jr., Yahoo‘s Jerry Yang and Merrill Lynch‘s Greg Fleming. Employees can certainly give us insight into the happenings within companies, and maybe an indicator of CEO tenure – or lack thereof.

Among the highest rated CEOs, according to employees, we note Genentech‘s Art Levinson remains among the top three highest rated CEOs on Glassdoor.com compared to what was reported in December (Last December Art Levinson was the #1 highest rated CEO followed by Apple‘s Steve Jobs (90%) and Goldman Sachs‘ Lloyd C. Blankfein (88%)). The biggest climb in ratings is with SAP CEO Henning Kagermann who climbed up to a 72% approval rating, 4 percentage points higher than what was reported in late December. The biggest drop in CEO approval rating among the highest rated CEOs at this time is NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang who dropped 8 percentage points in the past three months and now sits at a 73% approval rating. Also interesting to note that American Express CEO Ken Chenault dropped off the list of highest rated CEOs altogether – he now comes in as the 36^th most highly rated CEO.

Fortune Announces Best Places to Work: How does it compare?

As some of you may know in late December 2008, Glassdoor announced the Employee’s Choice Best Places to Work award. Today, Fortune has announced their annual 100 Best Places to Work For. See below the top 50 companies that made their list and the top 50 companies that made the Glassdoor list.

Here are some of the highlights when comparing the top 50 Best Places to Work:

Only 30% of companies recognized by Fortune made it into Glassdoor’s employee-selected top 10 companies
11 companies make both Glassdoor and Fortunes Top 50 Best Places to Work (see those highlighted in yellow)
Glassdoor’s #1 Best Place to Work, General Mills, falls to 99^th place on Fortune’s list
Fortune’s #1 Best Place to Work, NetApp, makes the 10^th spot on Glassdoor’s list

It’s surprising to see that eBay pops up on Fortune’s Top 100 list as a Best Place to Work. Based on the company ratings available at Glassdoor, eBay was actually one of the lowest rated companies according to employees. Currently eBay receives a modest 2.8 company rating and CEO John Donahoe garners a low 20% approval rating. (eBay ranked 83rd on the Fortune list)

What makes Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work list different to Fortune’s you ask?

Well first and foremost, the companies that make the Glassdoor Best Places to Work list are all entirely based on the rave company reviews and ratings from the people who know them best, the employees. Unlike other workplace lists and awards, there’s no self nomination process. The final ranking is determined by overall rating on Glassdoor for those companies that meet the eligibility requirements. Employees’ Choice Unveiled: Glassdoor Announces Top Best Places to Work

Since launching early this year, nearly 75,000 employees have come to Glassdoor to anonymously contribute salary information and share opinions about their company’s work environment and rate their overall satisfaction. We decided to tabulate the results and see who rated highest… and lowest. We are proud to announce the ultimate Employees’ Choice Awards for Workplaces in our first annual Best Places to Work Top 50¹ list.

Congratulations to General Mills, which topped the list of companies rated by their employees with a 4.5 company rating (on a 5-point scale) while giving General Mills CEO Ken Powell a 96% approval rating. It’s not hard to see why when looking at reviews². One employee writes “I’m proud to work for GMI! They are good community partners, they genuinely care about diversity, and they are well respected as a company. They are consistently ranked among the best companies to work for and their pay/benefits are competitive. The headquarters…is rather impressive as well boasting an impressive cafeteria, health facility…You could probably live on campus if you wanted to. These amenities go a long way into making the real life more manageable so that you can focus on performing well at your job.”

Another General Mills employee adds this review:

“Pros: Incredible work life balance! I started with General Mills many years ago in a interesting and challenging part-time position. Even during my part-time years, opportunities for growth were made available. Once my kids were older I returned to a full time schedule and pursued a management track.
Cons: The upsides of working for General Mills outweigh the downsides 100-1. The only observation I have is that General Mills is sometimes too good to their employees. The process for terminating an employee is so onerous that many managers just avoid it. Poor performers can linger for months or even years before someone takes action.
Advice to Senior Management: Outstanding company to work for!”

We know there are a number of lists out there where companies must nominate themselves and then spend considerable time and money to put together extraordinary marketing packets of information in hopes of being considered – let alone make the list. We’ve designed these awards with the same spirit of transparency on which we founded Glassdoor and think an award based exclusively on Employees’ Choice is an important reflection of that openness. (Particularly given the year we’ve all had!) In this first year, we’ve focused on companies that have U.S.-based employees because that’s where we have the most content to date, but we hope to expand the awards in the future to encompass other countries and companies with smaller employee bases. ¹To be eligible for the inaugural Employees’ Choice Awards for the Best Places to Work companies must have received at least 25 reviews from U.S.-based employees who are currently employees or who were employed at some time during 2008, maintain an above 3.5 cumulative average overall and across eight workplace factors addressed in the company’s voluntary 20-question survey, and the CEO must have an approval rating higher than 50%.

²Glassdoor carefully reviews each ratings survey, company review and salary report submitted through its website and only those surveys and reports that are approved by the Glassdoor research team are eligible for the list.
