Job Seekers: Focus On Bright Spots To Help You Find A Job

As if hurricanes and earthquakes weren’t enough, employers stayed skittish amidst a deluge of bad economic news in August as the economy added no non-farm jobs and the unemployment rate remained at 9.1%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It was less than economists expected. The private sector added only 17,000 jobs. Economists had forecast a 68,000 increase in non-farm jobs and no change in the unemployment rate.

Job Market Remains Sluggish In July: Reinvent Yourself. Get Noticed.

As heat waves blazed through the nation in July, the job economy warmed up a bit too, adding 117,000 non-farm jobs and bringing the unemployment rate down to 9.1%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It was more than economists expected.

Job Search Heats Up For Half A Million Americans; So Where Are The Jobs?

Half a million Americans started looking for jobs in August, deciding to rev up their search again after waiting out the recession. Most will search for a long time, but a few many have landed a job in a bar or at a temporary agency.

Friday’s Bureau of Labor Statistics jobless report showed 67,000 private-sector jobs created last month, a tepid pace that isn’t nearly strong enough to rebuild the economy for the millions of unemployed.

“Progress is indeed being made, but it is occurring in such small increments and it is so tenuous that it doesn’t seem like progress at all,” Challenger, Gray, Christmas CEO John A. Challenger said in a statement.

Among the progress, or pockets of possibilities, were the nation’s bars and restaurants, which hired 12,200 people.  Some construction companies hired crew and professional hiring continued, with accounting and administrative support jobs filled. Temporary firms added 17,000 jobs in the month, and are likely to keep adding them.

Hiring will continue in September, but at a modest pace, according to the Society of Human Resource Management. Its index actually shows a slowdown in hiring intentions for both manufacturers and service organizations compared to the spring, though it also reported recruiting has ...

Is No News Good News With Unemployment Rate?

Unemployment Line

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported its latest update on the state of unemployment and as we eagerly waited to hear how the job market was impacted in December, it was released that the unemployment rate held steady at 10%. While we are not trying to ignore the fact that this number is still significant, especially given that 85,000 jobs were shed in December, we are pleased to see that it has not increased. So does this unemployment rate mean that we are working our way out of the recession and that jobs will start to open up?

Here are some highlights from today’s NPR coverage that captures the good and the bad of what the BLS unemployment rate signifies:

The Good:

Analysts are expecting the unemployment rate will gradually start to decline in the coming months.
There was a big jump in temporary hiring, with 46,500 extra jobs, bringing the total increase in temporary employment to 166,000 since July.
November figures were revised to show that the economy actually added 4,000 jobs in that month, as opposed to the loss of 16,000 that was initially reported.

Hiring Advice For Employers, Recruiters & Talent Search Firms To Help Reduce Unemployment Rate

Despite a recommendation from a United States Senator, and a recommendation from the head of one of the Commissions that requires Senate confirmation, and another recommendation from the #2 person within another agency (and who happens to be one of the largest contributors to President Obama’s campaign), I could not get invited to the Presidential Job Summit.  In hindsight, I should have just dressed up and crashed it as that seems to work, but that just wouldn’t have been the right thing to do. I am not sorry that I wasn’t included other than I had hopes that something tangible would come from the session.  I may be one of the few Americans who watched all of the sessions online.  More to come on that and my learning from watching all of those sessions (btw, you can too on www.whitehouse.gov).

In the meantime, here is an idea that might help, without government subsidies or any taxpayer money… This initiative would be all of us helping each other out and participating in our own support in getting people back to work.  This initiative revolves around reducing one of the largest barriers that get in the way of hiring and that is the ...

Unemployment Rate Continues to Rise

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) issued its monthly report this morning on the state of unemployment – and the findings are not positive.  U.S. unemployment rose to 9.8 percent in September, up 0.1 percentage points from August. This means that a total of 15.1 million persons were unemployed in September, twice the number at the start of the recession.

Some of the results captured by Business Journal from the BLS report include:

In September, notable job losses occurred in construction, manufacturing, government, and retail trade. Construction employment decreased by 64,000 in September.
Job losses averaged 66,000 per month from May through September, compared with an average of 117,000 per month from November 2008 through April.
The average monthly job gain thus far in 2009 is 22,000, compared with an average monthly gain of 30,000 during 2008.
