According to Glassdoor’s recent UK Employment Confidence Survey (Q1 14), one in three (34%) UK employees expect a pay rise in the next 12 months, while one in four (24%) report their employer has restored health and dental benefits, pay and perks previously cut. While pay and benefits are one piece of the puzzle any job seeker considers when determining where to work, which companies are highest rated among UK employees when it comes to the total compensation and benefits packages they offer? To help answer this question for job seekers, Glassdoor has revealed results of its inaugural report of the Top 20 Companies for Compensation & Benefits (UK).

Interestingly, the three highest rated companies are all retailers – John Lewis (#1, 4.3 rating), Waitrose (#2, 4.2) and Harrods (#3, 4.1) (Compensation & Benefits ratings based on a 5-point scale: 1.0=very dissatisfied, 3.0=OK, 5.0=very satisfied).

In addition, 10 of the top 20 companies are headquartered in London, while telecommunications is the #1 represented industry on this report with four companies cracking the top 20, including Virgin Media (#6, 3.7 rating), Vodafone (#8, 3.7), Nokia (#10, 3.6) and Telefonica (#19, 3.4).

So, what is it that UK employees appreciate most about these companies’ compensation & benefits packages? For some employees, it’s about salaries and pay rises, for others it’s about benefits they say help make their lives in and out of work easier, such as free food, comfortable offices and paid time off for volunteer work.

Here’s what some employees have to say more specifically:

“Annual bonus; discount at JL and Waitrose; an immense amount of leisure, learning and entertainment subsidies; corporate membership to many national institutions.” – John Lewis Assistant Buyer (London)

“Competitive pay for a store assistant role especially considering the annual bonus, which for me was 18%.” – Waitrose Fresh Food Assistant (Birmingham)
