Job Description

Primary role:
As a world-class clinical and research institution, Duke Medicine
offers an exciting and dynamic
environment dedicated to scientific innovation, ground breaking
clinical care, education, and research.
The Associate CMIO will and serve as a clinical IT thought leader for
Duke University Health System.
As Duke installs the Epic EHR across its ambulatory and inpatient
environments, the Associate CMIO
will work oversee a large group of physician champions as they develop
clinical content and
implement clinical decision support. The ideal candidate is a proven
IT leader with deep experience
leveraging technology in a complex and highly creative academic health
system. The Associate CMIO
will provide leadership and strategic vision in the areas of clinical
content creation, clinical decision
support systems, and technology innovation that serves the diverse
needs of Duke Medicine faculty
and staff.

Organizational:
The Associate CMIO will report directly to the Chief Medical
Information Officer for Duke Medicine .

Essential tasks/responsibilities:
Provide IT strategic leadership and vision in support of the clinical
needs of Duke Medicine

Communicate effectively and ensure the alignment of IT initiatives
across Duke Medicine and across
the University.

Develop the governance structures necessary to ensure the efficient
escalation, vetting, and
prioritization of IT projects in support of faculty and staff

Develop strategies for ongoing assessment and understanding of faculty
workflow as they navigate
their work in the Health System, the School and the PDC in order to
develop streamlined electronic
systems for supporting work efficiency.

Work collaboratively with other members of the CMIO team to develop and
vet a compressive 5-year
strategic plan that leverages technology as an enabler of institutional
goals.

Develop and support a comprehensive and integrated strategy for
clinical care that supports and
enables the research and educational missions of the health system.

Explore new and emerging technologies (RTLS, RFID, Mobile computing,
Social Networking, PHRs, etc)
and develop strategies to best utilize these technology advances in
clinical care.

Investigate the use of new engagement technologies that integrate
information, reduce provider
cognitive burden, increase efficiency, and improve outcomes. Areas of
interest include computing,
telemedicine, and methods to better integrate and support photography
and video in providing care.

Provide leadership for the development and use of a robust
clinical-computing platform that addresses
and is responsive to evolving faculty and staff needs.

Work with relevant stakeholders to integrate advanced diagnostics into
clinical care.

Proactively seek to educate the stakeholders and seek their input
regarding IT strategic planning
initiatives and outcomes. Ensure mechanisms for responding efficiently
and effectively to requests for
service.
Identify and recommend new technology services or service improvements
that focus on the
effectiveness of clinical initiatives.
Serve on internal and external committees and teams as appropriate;
maintain liaison relationships with
the other schools of the university and their departments.
Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations,
including capital and
operating budgets; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of
budgeted funds. Challenge the cost of
delivery models; encourage competitive review and benchmark with
industry standards.

Education/training
Required: MD or DO Degree Required. Advanced training in medical
informatics preferred.

Experience
Required: A minimum of five years of senior management and leadership
experience in an
academic institution.

A solid working knowledge of heathcare IT, Electronic Health Records,
and Healthcare
Data Standards.

The ability to create and execute on an IT strategic vision in a
complex academic environment is
essential.
