Los Alamos National Laboratory - 30+ days ago
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. The Materials Synthesis and Integrated Devices Group (MPA-MSID) is comprised of research scientists, technicians, postdoctoral researchers, and students specializing in experimental chemistry, materials research, and applied energy applications. Our goal is to provide innovative and creative chemical synthesis, materials science, and engineering solutions to fundamental and applied research challenges relevant to the Laboratorys Missions, including our energy security, nuclear deterrence, and global threat reduction missions.
The Materials Physics and Applications Division (MPA) of the Experimental Physical Sciences (EPS) Directorate at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking graduate students with research interests and experience in one or more of the areas listed below. The graduate student will partner with staff to conduct research in the area of carbon capture and separations for energy applications. There are opportunities for technically advanced work performed here to be published in journals or conference proceedings. The graduate student will be encouraged to present final results in an oral presentation and/or poster format along with other students working in the division.
The student may gain experience in:
Materials Synthesis: polymer synthesis & processing, UV initiated polymer synthesis/modification, membrane fabrication, sorbent fabrication, spray drying, spray coating, thin film fabrication
Characterization: optical light microscopy, electron microscopy, optical spectroscopy (UV-Vis, FTIR), thermal & mechanical analysis (DMA, Tensile/Compression testing, TGA, DSC, Rheological Measurements), polymerization kinetics, electrical property characterization
Application Driven Property Measurements: gas diffusion, permeability, selectivity, & sorption, chemical and mechanical stability and durability
Minimum Job Requirements:
Student applicants should have a basic demonstrated understanding of one or more of the areas listed above as demonstrated by relevant coursework, previous work experience, or other activities. Strong computer, data acquisition, and data analysis skills are desired (LabView, Matlab, Origin, IGOR, MS Office). Student applicants should also have a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry, or a closely related technical field of study, be currently enrolled in a graduate program of study, and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 the semester before hire.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a pre-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
