Position Description

SAS programmers work in a multidisciplinary environment in support of policy research on a wide range of issues. Programmers work closely with the research staff in creating, managing, and analyzing large and complex data files across RAND's research areas, including health policy, labor and population, education and training, criminal and civil justice, national security and military manpower.

  • Use SAS to extract, clean, manage, and analyze administrative health care claims data as a member of research project teams
  • Work with a team on meta-analysis, helping manage data collection, conduct descriptive analysis, and create complex custom reports for health-related projects
  • Clean and analyze survey data using SAS, Stata or R
  • Acquire a strong understanding of research topics and a thorough knowledge of the data and programming efforts involved
Qualifications
  • Able to program in SAS, including SAS macro language, working knowledge of other data analysis apps (R, Stata, SQL, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Linux and relational database technologies preferred
  • Ability to produce careful and detail-oriented work
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities and strong analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Basic understanding of statistical methods (regression, ANOVA, t-tests, etc.)

The successful candidate will be an experienced, highly motivated self-starter with the ability to solve data analysis problems independently.

Education Requirements

BA/BS in statistics, biostatistics, economics, mathematics, quantitative social sciences, or related field required; MA/MS preferred.

Experience
  • Six-ten years of experience in SAS database and statistical programming
  • Minimum five years of experience in large administrative databases such as CMS claims, MarketScan health care claims, Workman Compensation records, SSA, or personnel data
  • Experience working in a research setting strongly preferred
Security Clearance

U.S. Citizenship may be required for positions requiring a U.S. government security clearance.
