No such thing as vacation. You are expected to work all day, every day. Doesn't matter if it's a vacation, 11:30 PM, you're at jury duty, bereavement leave, or wherever you might be. If you're breathing, you should be working. Vacation just meant that you were working somewhere else.
Technically employees had vacation time, but it was strongly discouraged and you were expected to be working while away from the office. I worked from home for two days after my child was born (no paternity leave) and I was charged a half day vacation time for each day.
