After every five years you work you get two additional weeks off
The amount of vacation given was decent for San Antonio, and the amount grew measurably as you moved up the ladder both in tenure and position. But in some positions, the amount of "blackout" periods where you couldn't have off were numerous. Altogether, the blackout periods effectively disallowed almost three months worth of days you couldn't schedule vacation. These surrounded every holiday, and the first two weeks of every quarter. So it's difficult to use it.
Vacation has improved over the years has gotten more competitive.
