The program put around $5.5K towards my college tuition. It wasn't much, and frankly I might have preferred to just get paid more. But it's part of how the grant works, they can only give us the money if we guarantee that it's for education.
You receive a 5,900 segal education award at the end of the term of service.
AmeriCorps offers the Seagal Education Award of $5,775 at the end of a full service year.
Being an Americorps member does mean you have access to loan forbearance throughout the term and upon completion a grant of $5000+ can be awarded to pay previous loans or pay for future schooling in the next 7 years.
There is a tuition reimbursement of about $5500 as well as deferment and paid interest while in service.
The education award at the end is the only thing that makes the salary really worth it but remember that it is taxed and you have to put aside a chunk of your own money to pay those taxes come next tax season. The taxes are not taken out automatically so you need to budget for that.
They raised it to $5715 which is good.

If you complete the term of service you get a $5500 education award that can be used to pay off student loans or to further your education. There are also a number of universities that 'match' or 'partially match' your education award as well as having other benefits for AmeriCorps alumni such as waiving the application fee or waiving the cost for a certain amount of credit hours per semester.
