If you're sick, you'll get the time off. But not without getting a stern talking to by the manager.
I have not taken advantage of this benefit, as a part-time employee I don't feel that I can brush off a shift if I suddenly get sick because I already have a significant amount of time off already. I have observed coworkers and managers eschewing off this benefit as well, appearing for work ill. There is a lot of stress related to when people are not available for their assigned shifts that there is pressure to be at work regardless of health condition.
