The performance bonus is based on a 9-square matrix of Performance and Leadership. Based on your professional grade, you are eligible for a bonus between 5 and 40 % of your salary. Professional bands fall at 5 or 10%; Manager, 15%; Senior mgr, 20%; Director, 30%; VP, 40%. This matrix model is known to be a poor indicator of performance, especially since it's done on a bell curve, where a certain % of employees must be in "red" squares and a limited number can be in "green" ones. 80-90% are yellow. Your bonus potential is modified based on which square you scored on the performance-leadership matrix. Red squares can be 10% (low performance & leadership), 50% (low performance, medium leadership), or 75% (med. performance, low leadership). Yellow squares are 60% (low performance, high leadership), 90% (med. performance and leadership - MOST COMMON SQUARE), and 100% (high performance, low leadership). Green can be 105% (med. performance, high leadership), 115% (high performance, med. leadership) or 125% (high performance & leadership). In order to give out green, managers must submit written justification. They are forced to give out a certain number of reds, which tend to trickle through teams so the lowest manager must give out the red. This can happen even if that manager's team is small - every year someone has to get red. As such, a high performer on a team of exceptional performers may end up red, while a mediocre performer on a team of low performers may be yellow.
