The best thing is the Deferred Compensation benefit, which is very similar to a 401k but through the government. The bonus is that you can cash this out at any time you leave your government position, and not just at 59 1/2. This is a bonus because many government employees retire before then.
Best: The company offers the best retirement benefit in the State of California. Worst: The company asks employees to contribute 50% of the pension benefit payments.
The benefits are not what everyone thinks-to have health coverage for three people or more you will pay in excess of $1200 per month. The perception that the County has excellent benefits is incorrect-as evidenced by the ongoing union strike.
As an intern I did not have any benefits. However, at the end of six months you are awarded healthcare. More permanent staff are given substantial benefits.
