No complaints. I found it to be very adequate.
PTO is accumulated each pay period along with sick time and discretionary time.
Condition based on individual Lab. Can be very flexible.
good amount of time off, when you are allowed to use it
Winter break is great! Though as PhD students you still need to work.
Very generous with holidays, vacation and sick time.
Duke uses a paid holiday system called Discretionary Days, which includes the usual national holidays. If you needed to work on a given holiday you can apply the time off to a different date. Earned vacation days roll over each year, there is a maximum but it's quite large. You can stockpile a maximum of 20 days' worth of vacation time with up to 4 years' service; max 30 days from 4-9 years service; and max 40 days if at Duke >9 years.
The paid time off and sick leave rolls over every years so it ends up accumulating very quickly. I was able to get all 12 weeks paid for maternity leave using my vacation and sick leave.
Up to 4 weeks vacation, plus sick time, and 7 or 8 holidays. Not too shabby.
I received generous amounts of vacation and sick time. And Duke has a program that allows employees to share unused sick time with others who need it.
