State Benefits - it is pretty standard. GCSD does offer some additional benefits such as cancer insurance, long term and short term disability, and additional life insurance on top of the normal state benefits.
The best thing about the benefits were the retirement accounts, which were matched by the district. The worst part was the insurance, which required money out of pocket when the salaries were so low. It was hard to make ends meet this way.
The state insurance plan is decent. The rates are somewhat high with limited coverage.
GCS has good benefits. The health insurance isn't the greatest but it is good enough. There are plenty of options for dental, eye, and supplemental insurance. Good 401k plans and options. Summer break is nice vacation time too.
The deductibles for all insurance plans are outrageous. Unless you are sickly, you will end up paying the majority of your medical expenses with or without insurance. The best value for your money is the lowest tier of insurance and the HSA. This allows you to funnel before tax money into an account to pay medical expense. There are many wonderful retirement savings plan options, however the pay is so low most cannot afford to contribute much.
State health plan basic coverage is better than nothing. Vision and dental plans cost extra.
