Employees on the lower tier of the pay scale can't afford to live closer than 20 miles of Seattle. They need their entire paycheck to simply make ends meet. You can't even afford to give to charity because your entire paycheck goes to basic human needs. It's a hopeless situation.

The 401k plan does not include any matching by the firm. When the firm makes a contribution (which it does not do every year), it is a percentage of salary.
