The vacation and sick days are great
Time off in the corporate office doesn't seem hard to come by. In the field, for the teachers who have to keep to tight schedules in order to maintain state-mandated ratios, using time off - especially in case of emergency - can sometimes be impossible.
1 week of required vacation that is dictated to the employees on when to use it.
The amount of paid time off allotted to us is great! But there isn't a great system to use it. We do not staff enough to allow for more than 2 people off at once. (and that even stretches us pretty tight) Those two people also can not be co-teachers. So getting time off at any time can be tricky, even if it's for going to the doctor. Also people save their vacation time for the holidays because (and it is stated in the handbook) if we have low numbers we only need to staff accordingly. There are many problems with this. Some people want to be off the most they can around the holidays. However, it should be our choice. (if we have the time for it) Otherwise, many of us view the holidays as a time to revamp, clean, and prepare for the next run of the school year. We don't get a lot of opportunity to prep for anything, so why not take advantage of the low numbers around the holidays so teachers can feel organized and ready for the new year? instead the company looks at the holidays like a time to save money on staffing costs. It's bad timing, I don't think the money they save is worth cutting the paychecks of their employees when they need money the most, and as a company I think they would most benefit from giving people the freedom to chose whether they work or not.
If you put in the proper time, energy and effort into your work and your manager is a solid person, he/she will not keep track of your vacation. This is an awesome perk to some and non existent to others.
You do not receive vacation time or ptop until your 1 yr anniversary and it is based on an average number of hours you worked.
