Pension plan is great; but not available for new hires.
The 401K is a 6% match which is equal or better than a lot of other firms. The Health insurance is instituted by using a pool of LANL workers, so we don't get the benefit of outside pool members. This tends to lead to yearly premium increases. This fiscal year is an exception. The plan is decent, but after your deductible is used up, the plan is basically an 80/20 plan. This can put a burden on an individual with a large health event.
Benefits are good for the area based on other opportunities in northern NM
Generally the benefits package is very good. Every provider accepts the employer sponsored health insurance.
The most impressive aspect of Los Alamos's benefits (if this really qualifies) was their willingness to compensate interns even during a forest fire that evacuated the entire county. The interns were unable to work but were paid for full weeks' worth of work nonetheless.
No benefits for students. Even if we're forced to take a day off we just don't get to work.
Very little PTO (accumulate yearly from 0), poor wellness benefits, very poor mental health coverage
Excellent medical benefits for reasonable employee cost
I am a casual employee so I don't know all of the benefits. I work on a 9/80 Schedule and I am able to get every other Friday off. I think full time employees get very generous retirement packages.
The best thing about LANL is the amount of vacation and sick time, as well as the 401K matching (up to 6%).
