    You are typically discouraged from taking the full amount of time off allocated to you for paternity. I have had staff quit because they were expected to chase down new mothers at home on paternity leave. I have also had to defend one of my direct reports simply because he asked what the maximum allowed time was. At year end this was perceived as a negative strike against his performance (verbally, on paper my manager made up other reasons to reduce his performance grade). I myself came back to work only after a few days of my wife giving birth – I got a nice bonus that year. Note: This review is from an IT employee view, other departments may operate differently.
