NYC had a pretty high guaranteed return on your pension plan. My pension plans from Lehman and Deutsche banks were based on the stock market.
This was actually a really good thing. Long-standing Pension that seems to be backed up by the NY State legislature and is no danger of going away, due to political clout with the Union and the State.
If you can stay until you are 66 years old you will get a good pension based upon your credentials
Depending on the tier the benefits can be either really generous or generous enough. Tier 6 which applies to most new hires provides good pension benefits but is vested in 10 years not 5 as with other private sector employers.
This is the best deal ever. It's very hard to find a profession nowadays with a pension plan. It's worth all the aggravation for this pension plan.
Vesting takes 5 years to qualify.
TDA is excellent you can borrow against if you're low on cash. To pay back there are reasonable installments that come directly out each paycheck.
The pension plan is a blessing to have.
