Vacation, when if finally was granted would only last 2 months. Many times, I was held onboard a ship and not released for vacation until another Training & Development Manager was onboard. One time, I missed Christmas at home with my family because the T&D Manager replacing me had gone on medical leave. I was stuck onboard for 6 months. This was 2 months longer than my contract stated. The positive thing is that I was eligible for paid vacation time. it accrued while I worked onboard.
Tied to tenure, but was negotiable at hire. Many managers expect you to be on call (even for nonessential roles) during time off.
You start with about 2 weeks of vacation in the first year, bumped to 3 weeks after 5 years, and 4 weeks after 10 years. There's no rollover of vacation time. PTO (sick time) is 7 days per year.
