They are honestly great.
The health insurance options and PTO are in line with other companies of this caliber, meaning they are good benefits but wouldn't tip the scale when comparing to other companies. SM&A did contribute to employee HSA plans for the first year this option was offered, but then cut that contribution in the second year. Still the HSA plan is a better option for many than if the company only offered an FSA plan. They are fairly generous with PTO, offering 3 weeks starting out and growing to 4 weeks by the 5th year of employment. SM&A’s 401k plan is its weakest benefit and needs improvement. Using Bloomberg’s 401k analyzer tool, their plan scored 27 out of 100 points, ranking it far below the 50 other companies listed. Cumulatively, over the past 4 years, SM&A employer contributions to an individual’s 401k plan has been less than 1.5% of gross salary, and for 2015 SM&A contributed *nothing*. In addition, employer contributions are only made annually, 3 months into the next year, which reduces the growth potential of their contributions and is a major deduction according to Bloomberg’s analyzer. There are no stock options or other incentives that I’m aware of. Although SM&A seems to pay well, they don’t put much effort into investing in their employee’s retirement. The 401k management company does a great job and provides many options for employees to build the stock portfolio they want, while also offering retirement planning guidance and automatic guided investing. SM&A's best benefit is it's flexibility in letting each consultant balance work and personal life, which can be very difficult as a road warrior. They trust each employee to negotiate a work schedule with the client that will get the work done and also allow the consultant the necessary time for traveling and being home with family. SM&A embraces technology which allows people to work remotely and be connected to their clients virtually.
