My boss works with me and is always understanding and tries to make fair compromises if I need to change my availability. He is really understanding when it comes changing my available hours during the school year, especially if it regards grades and needing more time to focus on those, because they are more important than a part-time job in the end. While you may not always like the days or hours you are scheduled to work, he only schedules you to work hours that comply with the availability you gave to him. I hate working 12 hour shifts on Saturdays, but he only schedules me then because my availability says I can work anytime from open to close on Saturdays. Hours are really flexible if need be, but this usually depends on someone always working weekends at your job. Fortunately for my co-workers I am that guy.
They will work with your schedule as long as you notify them in advance (at least a week). Generally, they will give you the days you have ask off for as long as it is not an extra-ordinary circumstance.

My hours were never consisted if you called in one day or said one wrong thing the manager in charge of the schedule would cut your hours the next week.

You can pretty much work your schedule out depending on your coworkers schedule. Most of the time, they have the older people in the mornings when the kids are at school, then have the kids work evenings. At least that's how it was at my location. But the flexibility is pretty good as long as your coworkers are flexible.
Being in Oklahoma the weather is anything but normal. There is a team that will constantly monitor conditions and close the entire office if there is a need for it. Around holidays as well they try to make sure that the employees have plenty of time to spend with their families even without taking time off.
