Since there is little clear direction within IT, there is no clear technical development path. All development is aimed at management of workers and resources. The strange implementations of technology (often counter to the technology architecture) make it impossible to utilize commercially available courses. For example; the implementation of VMware is such that 1) there is no use of snapshots, 2) a single virtual disk is allocated, then partitioned into an OS and Data disk (so restoration involved reinstalling the OS AND copying back all of the data).
