As a VA employee, you are part of the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). Under FERS, you are eligible for monthly retirement benefits after just 5 years of Federal service.
When you are sixty years old you will be glad.
Be sure to contribute to the TSP for retirement. Very low cost management fees.

Retirement plan includes part pension, and part thrift savings plan (TSP). Employer matches TSP contributions up to 5%. Investment options are limited in TSP, but admin costs are very low.
401 k matches the first 5 percent from right off the bat. Has been a moneymaker for me

It has great matching in TSP and FERS is also deducted. It forces you to save I think it is great
