The TSP plan for retirement at VA is top-notch. The VA matches up to 5% of your contribution to your TSP (which is very much like a 401K). You may go online or call to manage your fund as you see fit. Funds range from "G" (government fund, a safety fund that never goes negative, but gains slowly) upward, and you may allocate your money as you see fit between funds to manage your risk as years of service go by. Also, employees frequently receive investment advice via email from VA human resources staff, and from TSP, to help guide their decisions as they manage their retirement funds throughout their career.
