Employees may eventually work remotely.
Very complete benefits package, but limited due to being government agency.
Telework eligibility for most employees; good/affordable on-site daycare and fitness center; nice location in Old Town Alexandria
Standard federal benefits are available.
Government pay scale. They make all employees to contribute to the pension plan since 2014. Nice gym on the first floor inside one of the buildings.
Beast - vacation, health insurance, flexible work schedule
Best thing: extremely flexible schedule. As long as I get my hours in on a biweekly schedule I can flex them however I want. This means not having to use vacation up if I just want to flex off a day. Worst thing: how slowly vacation days are accrued. You start off by earning 4 hours of vacation for every two weeks worked. Which means if I do need to take a day, it represents a month of my time.
Benefits are top notch
Standard govt benefits. However, I was disappointed that health benefits do not kick in until after your first paycheck. That means you and your family will be without health insurance for at least 4 weeks.
The main perk at the USPTO is working from home. The TSP (401K equivalent) is also good. Compared to my college and law school friends, the health insurance, bonuses, and other perks are way below average. You often hear about "great" federal benefits. It might be true with regard to some industries, but all my college friends have much better benefits than the Federal Government provides.
