Employer Summary

Union Pacific not only invests in your career, we invest in your future. We offer exceptional financial security with our Railroad Retirement and a comprehensive 401(k) plan.

Railroad Retirement Board

The Railroad Retirement Board administers retirement and survivor and unemployment/sickness insurance benefits for railroad workers and their families. This is a government benefit that requires payroll tax deductions, with contributions from both the company and employees.

401(k) Comprehensive Plan

The 401(k) Comprehensive Plan is a flexible and convenient way to save for your retirement. It offers a variety of investment options, with up to 17 funds to choose from. Union (agreement) employees are eligible to participate after one year of service. Non-union (non-agreement) employees are eligible to participate immediately upon joining the company. Union Pacific will also match your 401(k) contributions dollar-for-dollar invested, up to six percent of your salary, plus provide an additional 3% annual contribution from Union Pacific based on your salary.

Most Commented

  • Health Insurance(110 comments)

Worst: Deductibles and employee portion of the premiums is higher than some companies. Best: The policy itself is top-tier; large network, covers almost everything.

  • Retirement Plan(57 comments)

Railroad retirement is great but there’s not many people making it these days. It’s a system that no longer works because of the mass layoffs and the inability to transfer your retirement to a different plan when you leave.

  • Vacation & Paid Time Off(50 comments)

Start at 3 weeks and recently improved benefit so don't have to wait as long to get more vacation (maxes out at 5 weeks)

Traditional large company benefits; Health coverage is very broad, although high deductibles and higher cost sharing than other companies (but the policy itself is top-tier in terms of what it covers). 401(k) for new employees is very generous (Company will contribute up to 9% of salary).

They’re still available but there’s bigger copays and less coverage. Other companies are offering better benefits.
