Honestly the benefits are why people stay as along as they do. My health care is great and I have fantastic coverage, 401K matching is really good and tuition benefits are a huge perk for families.

For graduate students, there is not much opportunity for vacations, but if the faculty is good, then students can go on tour and vacation
For my position there was no retirement plan and no paid leave. But there was health insurance. It wasn't great, and it got worse as they kept changing it, but getting health insurance for part time work is pretty rare so I'm not complaining.
The insurance package is getting worse, comparing to the one I get in first year employment.
