One of the better perks at UVA
I had worked as a contractor prior to this position and was only given 10 days of PTO. 22 days of PTO far exceeded my expectations.
We get more days off a year than I typically use. Obtaining approval for time off is simple.
Good compared to private sector - not as high as other universities I've worked for.
Plenty of time off every year, more than I use, and I use a decent amount of time. The hardest part is making the time in the year to take off. Absolutely unprecedented.
December and spring break is paid but summers are not
Difficult to take at times.
pretty standard but no vacation for maternity
Lots of paid time off and usually not hard to get time off
There are multiple PTO programs depending on your classification and if you are working for the UVA Academic division or UVA Health System. On the Academic side there is the single PTO bank plus holidays, or for staff who started as State Classified employees a state leave system with separate annual/sick leave benefits. Faculty have a different schedule in their contracts. When looking at jobs at UVA be sure to check on how they are classified.
