The best thing about the benefits is great health and dental insurance at low cost for the employees. Great legal resources, and retirement
Legal benefits, retirement, life insurance
No benefits for Pals Instructors
VBCPS is a great place to work. The school division treats teachers as professionals and values their input. You have to sign in and out for leave, but they trust that you put in the hours. You can take leave in 15 minute increments and not have to take a half or whole day off just for a doctor appointment etc.
The school or the city should have the same benefits we had many years ago, where they picked up most of the cost and we paid a very small portion of the cost. The premium health insurance is outrageously overpriced and the deductible is so high, you may as well not have the insurance if you have to pay out of pocket before it kicks in. Ridiculous way to treat your government employees. If there is vacation time, we are so understaffed that we just can't take any time off. If you do take any significant time off due to FMLA, be prepared to pay back all your premiums that they paid for you while you were gone. I also had to change doctors with the health insurance. If not in "their" network, your copay goes up another 20 dollars. When you aren't paid a living wage to begin with, any extra out of pocket is a huge issue.
The school system pays for part of the health insurance, but they won't pay for any of the dental.
Good health insurance, ways to earn money in the wellness program, good EAP services and VA Retirement System.
They offer an excellent benefit package, but with the economy, if you need the family plan it it a bit pricey; however, not as bad as other companies.
The benefits package from Virginia Beach Schools is very nice. They cover pretty much all the stages of life. On the negative side I make about 2500 a month before taxes and benefits come out. Out of that I pay nearly $700 in benefits with over 600 of that just Health insurance. I think most of the cost are being driven from the Affordable Care Act. I will say this, last year I had to remove my wife from my plan and have her on her own through her work or my plan would be SIGNIFICANTLY higher. So now instead of one Family plan I have a plan with my kids and she is by herself through her work. However I love Virginia Beach Schools and I would recommend them as an employer to anyone I know!
Overall the benefits are decent. With the institution of the Affordable Care Act insurance has been restructured several times and become more expensive.
