The US Department of the Army has its marching orders. One of the three military departments (along with the Air Force and Navy) of the US Department of Defense, the Army provides ground-based military forces to deter and fight wars and protect the security of the US. Annually, the DFAS pays nearly 6 million military and civilian personnel, retirees, and annuitants; processes some 14 million contractor invoices; and makes more than 7 million travel payments, disbursing about $590 billion, total. Additionally, it manages some $394 billion in military retirement trust funds. DFAS is financed by its customers rather than through direct appropriations. It operates through 26 locations worldwide. Theresa McKay was named DFAS Director in 2008.
