What does an Application Consultant do?

Applications consultants implement and configure applications setups and application-driven systems. These consultants analyze current technical systems and recommend changes to improve efficiency or streamline operations, and may modify off-the-shelf applications and customize them according to client or organization’s specific needs. They often provide tech support and troubleshoot problems, and may oversee training programs to educate users with the implementation or operation of new applications.

Applications consultants typically have a bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field. They may also have an IT-related associate degree and several years of professional experience. Consultants often have advanced expertise with specific categories of computer applications. Troubleshooting capabilities, data analysis skills, and training experience are all advantages. Must be comfortable explaining application processes to users with varying level of computer skills.

What responsibilities are common for Application Consultant jobs?
  • Provide functional and technical guidance over the whole project or application life cycle and act as a client-facing lead developer.
  • Integration testing and user acceptance testing.
  • Operational and technical issues and translate technical blueprints into requirements and specifications.
  • Review, analyze, and evaluate as-is business processes within the Demand to Supply (DTS) work stream.
  • Identify opportunities for greater integration and automation of security operations and monitoring capabilities.
  • Make recommendations for policy changes pertaining to cybersecurity and information security to support continued cybersecurity maturation.
  • Promote the goals, expectations, and policies of the department and organization.
  • Configure user requirements using standard SAP defined planning methods
  • Provide guidance to the businesses on the appropriate use of the SAP system.
  • Perform or manage production support of SAP business processes as needed.
  • Conduct or participate in user requirements gather, blueprinting, and documentation designs.
  • Project leadership and support of all active units and departments using SAP, with primary focus area on warehouse management.
  • Create and manage SAP project tracks to implement or deploy capabilities as required: blueprints, gap analysis, end-to-end process design, testing strategy, cutover plans, training, etc.
  • Responsible for the full systems life cycle from requirements gather through implementation of SAP Warehouse Management (WM) functional solutions.
  • Work closely with clients and demonstrate individual functional and professional knowledge to ensure that the work products and deliverables are of the highest caliber to ensure client satisfaction.
  • Apply project management expertise to identify, develop, and implement techniques to improve engagement productivity, increase efficiencies, mitigate risks, resolve issues, and optimize cost savings and efficiencies for clients.
  • Understand configuration dependencies and interrelationships between separate functional modules of SAP and provide expertise into the definition and resolution of issues in this area with this knowledge.
  • Use automated tools to identify risks and vulnerabilities in networks, interconnected systems, and applications. interpreting the results. and communicate and manage remediation action plans with technical and operational contacts.
  • Facilitate and lead incident triage and emerging risk protocols as well as coordinate incident management functions and root-cause analysis.
  • Build and deliver executive communication regarding project strategy decisions on scope, cost and quality.
  • Act as escalation point for solution design or troubleshooting with outside service partners.
  • Lead and assist in SAP design sessions or blueprint workshops.
What are the typical qualifications for Application Consultant jobs?
  • Bachelor's or Graduate's Degree in business, computer science, engineering, information management systems or software engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with SQL, SQL server, C, cloud, JavaScript, JAVA, CSS, and C# software and systems.
  • Fluency in database modeling, relational databases, business process analysis, and machine learning.
  • Experience with procedure development and enterprise resource planning.
  • Comfortable with scripting and database modeling.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills alongside time management, problem-solving, and attention to details.
