The US Department of the Army has its marching orders. One of the three military departments (along with the Air Force and Navy) of the US Department of Defense, the Army provides ground-based military forces to deter and fight wars and protect the security of the US. The army has more than 675,000 soldiers, including active duty soldiers (nearly 75%) and reservists (Army National Guard and Army Reserves). Army personnel are deployed in about 80 countries. The Army operates about 40 forts throughout the US and has bases in Africa, Europe, Japan, the Middle East, and South Korea.

The George Washington University's name is just one more reminder of the regard the nation holds for its first president. Chartered by the US Congress in 1821 as The Columbian College in the District of Columbia, the university adopted its present name in 1904. The private, coeducational university's more than 25,000 students are scattered across its primary campus at Foggy Bottom as well as its campuses in Mount Vernon and Ashburn, Virginia. The school's student-teacher ratio is about 15:1. Its academic programs run the gamut from business to law to medicine. Notable alumni include former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, actor Alec Baldwin, and former US Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Higher education is at the core of this Big Apple institution. The setting and heritage of New York University (NYU) make it one of the nation's most popular educational institutions. With more than 50,000 students attending its 14 schools and colleges, NYU is among the largest private schools in the US. Its Tisch School of the Arts is well-regarded, and its law school and Leonard N. Stern School of Business are among the foremost in the country. NYU occupies five major centers in Manhattan; its Washington Square campus is in the heart of Greenwich Village. The school was founded in 1831. Notable alumni include former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and film producer Oliver Stone.

To be a marine, you gotta have faith. The United States Marine Corps' motto, Semper Fidelis, Latin for always faithful, reflects service members' dedication to each other, their corps, and their country. The Marine Corps has two missions: make Marines and win battles. The military branch operates artillery, aviation, expeditionary, and infantry units. It has four divisions and works out of about 35 bases and stations in the US and Japan. It is the smallest of the military branches with just more than 202,000 active duty personnel and some 40,000 reservists. The Marine Corps traces its roots to the American Revolution and 1775, when the Continental Marines was formed.
