John Sperling, PhD, a Cambridge-educated economist, professor and entrepreneur, founded University of Phoenix in 1976 in response to the changing needs of the workplace. It was part of his commitment to provide adults with the higher education they would need to fill those needs and for forty years, that’s exactly what we’ve done. The times have changed, but our objective has remained the same – to help people enhance their lives through education. The US Department of the Army has its marching orders. One of the three military departments (along with the Air Force and Navy) of the US Department of Defense, the Army provides ground-based military forces to deter and fight wars and protect the security of the US. The army has more than 675,000 soldiers, including active duty soldiers (nearly 75%) and reservists (Army National Guard and Army Reserves). Army personnel are deployed in about 80 countries. The Army operates about 40 forts throughout the US and has bases in Africa, Europe, Japan, the Middle East, and South Korea.

Sun lovers and knowledge seekers can turn to Arizona State University (ASU) for a well-rounded college education. The research university offers a wide variety of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs, with more than 250 majors through 17 schools teaching a range of disciplines including nursing, journalism, and engineering. It has an enrollment of about 70,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on its four campuses in metropolitan Phoenix; most students attend the Tempe campus. The university has a student-teacher ratio of 23:1. ASU was founded in 1885 as a teachers college.

Education isn't just for show in the Show Me State. The University of Missouri (UM), founded in 1839, educates about 70,000 students at four campuses and through a statewide extension program; about a quarter of students are in graduate or professional programs. The university's campuses include flagship UM-Columbia (home to roughly 32,000 students, some 20 schools and colleges, and the University of Missouri Health Sciences Center), UM-Kansas City, UM-St. Louis, and the Missouri University of Science and Technology. Nicknamed "Mizzou," the University of Missouri System has close to 7,600 faculty members and a student-teacher enrollment of about 11:1.

Oregon State University (OSU) offers about 200 undergraduate and more than 80 graduate degree programs at about a dozen colleges and schools, including nationally recognized programs in engineering, environmental sciences, forestry, and pharmacy. The university is also home to centers of marine science and gene research and biotechnology, a wave research laboratory, and the Linus Pauling Institute. It also offers professional, certificate, non-degree, and extension programs, as well as precollege programs for elementary and high school students. In addition to its main campus in Corvallis, the university operates OSU-Cascades in Bend, Oregon. OSU has an annual enrollment of more than 18,000 students.

Having been founded even before the United States, Rutgers University can teach its students a thing or two about history. Founded in 1766 as Queen's College, the university was the colonies' eighth institution of higher education. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees from more than two dozen schools and colleges on three campuses (Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick/Piscataway, New Jersey). Rutgers has about 57,000 students and some 4,000 faculty members. The university's schools and colleges offer undergraduate majors in more than 100 fields, including business and law. Rutgers' name changed in 1825 to honor Revolutionary War hero and alumnus Colonel Henry Rutgers.
