Through 10 colleges, the Mormon-owned university offers bachelor's degrees in some 190 academic programs, master's in nearly 65, doctorates in another 25, and a juris doctorate. Its enrollment includes about 33,000 students, with more than 97% identifying themselves as Mormon; the student-teacher ratio is 21:1. BYU was founded in 1875 by Brigham Young, who led some 3,500 church members fleeing religious persecution to found their own settlement in Salt Lake City.

The University of Connecticut (UConn) was founded in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School. It's grown a lot since then: More than 28,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students receive instruction through UConn's six campuses and 14 colleges and schools, including schools of law and social work and a graduate business learning center in Hartford, as well as schools of medicine and dental medicine and the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. UConn offers about 100 undergraduate majors, more than 15 graduate programs in some 90 fields of study, and five professional degree programs. It confers more than 6,500 degrees annually.

Montana State University helps develop young minds in Big Sky Country. The university, located in Bozeman, serves more than 12,300 students, most of whom are undergraduates from Montana. The school offers baccalaureate degrees in more than 50 fields, master's degrees in more than 40 fields, and doctoral degrees in about 20 fields. Founded in 1893 the school offers primarily a liberal arts education, though it is also strong in agriculture and the arts. The university provides courses in fields ranging from English to political science to engineering. Among its staff are about 800 faculty members. Tuition and fees for residents is $5,800.

It offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate degree programs, including master's, doctoral, first professional, and post-doctoral programs. It confers some 5,500 degrees annually and has about 2,000 faculty members. UK also operates the Chandler Hospital. A public university and research institution, the school was founded in 1865 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of the Kentucky University.
