What does a Computer Technician do?

Computer Technicians are responsible for maintaining computer equipment and providing support to anyone within an organization who needs technological assistance. They do everything from perform maintenance to configure components and software, and install routine updates to system software. They also create technical documentation and lead workshops to demonstrate how to use computer equipment. Computer Technicians work in all kinds of different organizations including health care companies, educational institutions, government agencies and more.

Computer technicians may hold an associate's or bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related field, but often they do not. Employers typically look for candidates who can exemplify comprehensive knowledge of computer systems and hardware, regardless of their education level. The most successful Computer Technicians have excellent customer service skills and are superior problem solvers.

What responsibilities are common for Computer Technician jobs?
  • Set up and configure computers and peripheral equipment such as printers, scanners, etc
  • Perform audits and tests on computer systems, networks and hardware to ensure it is functioning properly
  • Respond to support requests and assist in troubleshooting any problems that arise
  • Attempt to replicate reported technical problems and look for solutions
  • Ensure all software and hardware is up-to-date and install updates as required
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance to avoid system outages and failures
  • Maintain computer network, system and hardware documentation for colleagues to reference
  • Train colleagues on how to effectively use computer systems and components
