What does a Data Center Technician do?

Data center technicians are the skilled hands-on professionals who provide various services that keep data servers and hardware networks operating smoothly. They serve as the first line of defense in safeguarding a company’s valuable and sensitive information. They complete preventative maintenance of equipment and network devices and perform tasks including running cables, improving physical security, and checking utilities. They examine power sources and heating and cooling controls to ensure a data center will not overheat and troubleshoot and repair servers with hardware or network issues.

Data center technicians are called on to quickly fix issues and keep business data flowing if errors occur. They monitor and maintain the operation of all network processes and evaluate machine temperature levels for optimal performance. They must maintain accurate work records and event logs and create concise virtual information reports to keep management informed of status updates. Data center technicians need a bachelor's or an associate's degree in a technical field including computer science or engineering and at least one year in tech support experience.

What responsibilities are common for Data Center Technician jobs?
  • Monitor and perform ongoing maintenance on servers and network equipment.
  • Effectively communicate with customers via email, phone, and other electronic methods to ensure client's effective use of products.
  • Willingness to respond to network and server errors after hours.
  • Perform network closet clean-up, switch port optimization, and survey work as needed.
  • Conduct data center audits of electrical systems, and lead improvements.
  • Attain customer satisfaction with all such projects assigned.
  • Maintain direct interface with sales and operations functions in the region.
  • Ensure server and application compliance with security and performance requirements.
  • Integrate and partner with programs to solve complex infrastructure problems.
  • Complete repairs and perform corrective maintenance and routine installations.
  • Prepare data center specifications and design criteria for retrofits, and provide input on future data center design reviews.
  • Review and develop detailed scripts for change management request (CMR) activities.
  • Provide input into training material for seminars, practical and online training.
  • Properly retrieve and file medical records and ensure patient confidentiality.
  • Use a combination of product management and application knowledge to guide customers through successful implementations.
  • Run hardware diagnostics and replacing failing parts in a timely manner.
  • Create and maintain accurate and credible records of maintenance, changes, problems, methods-of-procedures (MOPs) and resolutions.
  • Review product documentation for accuracy, content, and ease of use.
