What does a Data Specialist do?

Data specialists are information technology experts who analyze, collect, sort, and create testable electronic data and information systems. They compile data regularly to create reports they provide to upper management or present at board meetings to aid in decision-making. They consult with others who utilize this data in other projects. Data specialists oversee the entire conversion process well information transfers from paper to an electronic data system. They research data sources to verify the validity of the information and might be responsible for designing a database for a specific client to use.

Data specialists train clients in using new data storage and retrieval systems, databases, and software. They analyze a client's existing network and create programs to improve or enhance it. Sometimes they design the database or software program needed to convert the client’s data. They must consistently report a conversion program’s progress to their clients and cover workflow and workflow disruption, exceptions, costs, and analysis results. Data specialists also maintain a database and answer questions users might have regarding the system. Data specialists need a minimum bachelor's degree in computer science or information science.

What responsibilities are common for Data Specialist jobs?
  • Prepare and lead CRM training for different user levels (both in-person and webinars).
  • Create edit checks for all external data type and perform validation.
  • Perform any and all other tasks and activities as requested.
  • Handle complex data requests, reports, and predictive data modeling.
  • Assist in training all new data entry and temporary staff.
  • Serve as a lead regarding complex data issues and resolution.
  • Assist the CRM System and data manager with weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting as needed.
  • Generate, resolve and track queries to address problematic data identified during data review activities and apply proper modification / correction to the database.
  • Troubleshoot and offer solutions based on the project's needs.
  • Draft specifications for medium to high-complexity listings and reports.
  • Increase the breadth and quality of data that is tracked, monitored and analyzed for both internal use and client reporting.
  • Lead and manage data integration and conversion areas of planning, coordination, and meeting customer expectations.
