What does a Director of Public Relations do?

Public relations managers plan and direct the creation of materials that enhance an employer or client’s public image. They develop their organization’s or client’s corporate image and identity through the stories they tell about them. They enhance the organization’s or client’s brands and image and form a coherent, streamlined message on behalf of the organization or client. They develop the organization’s or client’s corporate image and identity possible audiences, determining the best way to reach them.

Public relations managers designate an appropriate spokesperson or information source to handle media inquiries and help clients communicate effectively with the public when necessary. They write press releases and prepare information for media outreach and campaigns and devise advertising and promotion programs for the organization or clients and assign, supervise, and review staff activities. They recommend ways to enhance the firm's image and sometimes handle internal communications, including company newsletters. They may also draft speeches, arrange interviews, and maintain other forms of public contact. Public relations managers need at least a bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, English, fundraising, or journalism.

What responsibilities are common for Director of Public Relations jobs?
  • Conduct and manage the flow of research and work materials necessary to analyze client issues.
  • Assist in planning, monitoring, and managing the budget for the development team.
  • Website, email marketing, social media, localization, trade events and field sales support.
  • Assist the manager in monitoring on a continual basis the level of incoming /outgoing calls turnover transaction rates and error/write offs.
  • Combine both day-to-day management and long-range strategy development.
  • Build and manage a team to help execute day-to-day activities.
  • Stay plugged in to trends and breaking news in the business, media, and marketing.
  • Plan and execute media relations programs, events and launch activities. Lead media relations efforts and initiatives.
  • Guide overall marketplaces strategy to deliver the plan goal based on insight, data, and learning.
  • Serve as consultant to internal departments and helping executives build their social media influence.
  • Responsible for coordinating activities, develop strategies, build relationships.
  • Execute corporate partnership game day asset execution and manage corporate inventory including but not limited to in game, TV and radio.
  • Delegate work and manage performance to ensure a successful team.
  • Review work to ensure compliance with procedures and deadlines.
What are the typical qualifications for Director of Public Relations jobs?
  • Bachelor's or Graduate's Degree in business, communications, or marketing or equivalent experience.
  • Six Sigma Black Belt experience.
  • Comfortable with R Language, Ls, SOX, Google Suite, and General Ledger systems and programming.
  • Demonstrated leadership and problem solving skills.
  • Experience with editing and budget planning.
  • Able to strive for continuous improvement with an ability to prioritize tasks and needs.
  • Skilled at communications management and collaboration.
  • Has an understanding of the art of persuasion and strict attention to detail.
